A prospective observational study of visual analog scale (VAS) scores for pain in patients operated at one institution within the framework of a national registry. ⋯ Measuring pain intensity with VAS is a useful tool in describing spine patients. In the search for a standard in the evaluation of pain as an outcome, the differences between the various methods should be taken into account.

Comparative evaluation of single-level closing-wedge vertebral osteotomies for the correction of fixed kyphotic deformity of the lumbar spine: a cadaveric study.
Anatomic study. ⋯ The authors recommend single-level posterior decancellation procedures for correction of fixed kyphotic deformities of the thoracolumbar spine to decrease the risk to anterior neurovascular structures. An additional 10-13 degrees of correction can be obtained with the authors' modification.

Quantitative analysis of transforming growth factor-beta 1 in ligamentum flavum of lumbar spinal stenosis and disc herniation.
The concentration of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta1) was examined in the ligamentum flavum of lumbar spinal stenosis and disc herniation. ⋯ The current results suggest that higher expression of TGF-beta1 by fibroblasts might be related to the development of hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum in lumbar spinal stenosis.

A multisurgeon assessment of curve classification, selection of operative approach, and fusion levels via a case study presentation. ⋯ This case study assessment found a relatively high rate (84-90%) of agreement in curve classification of the individual components of a new classification system of AIS. This suggests the ability of a group of scoliosis surgeons to identify the specific criteria necessary for this new classification system of AIS. In addition, the high variability in selection of both operative approach and fusion levels confirms the current lack of standardized treatment paradigms. This further reinforces the need for a method to critically and objectively evaluate these variable treatments to determine the "best" radiographic and clinical results.
