Axial loading, rotation, and bending were applied to human cadaveric lumbar segments to investigate the changes in disc mechanics with denucleation and incremental delivery of a novel hydrogel nucleus replacement. ⋯ Compliant nucleus replacement using inflation pressures of 20 to 40 psi resulted in restoration of intact mechanics. Mechanical function was dependent on the volume of implant injected into the nucleus cavity.

Lumbar microdiscectomy with spinal anesthesia: comparison of prone and knee-chest positions in means of hemodynamic and respiratory function.
Prospective clinical study to compare the physiologic changes in lumbar disc surgery regarding to positions. ⋯ In conclusion, spinal anesthesia is appropriate for lumbar disc surgery with respect to the hemodynamic parameters in both prone and knee-chest positions, however, in terms of pulmonary functions, the knee-chest position can cause a restrictive effect. Therefore this position should be used cautiously in higher-risk patients.

Case report. ⋯ This technique describes a novel, safe, and effective method to deal with anterior instrumentation from the posterior approach while performing posterior-based osteotomies for rigid spinal deformities.

Electrophysiological analysis using somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) and behavioral assessment using Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan (BBB) scale were compared over time for graded Multicenter Animal Spinal Cord Injury Study (MASCIS) contusion spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ SEP amplitudes and BBB scores decrease corresponding to increase in injury severity, however, these show different temporal patterns of recovery. These results demonstrate the utility of SEPs in conjunction with BBB, to monitor therapeutic interventions in SCI research.

A case report. ⋯ We have reported a rare case of a metastatic PET presenting as spinal cord compression.
