Analysis of the prospectively collected American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. ⋯ All levels of anemia were significantly associated with prolonged length of hospitalization and poorer operative or 30-day outcomes in patients undergoing elective spine surgery. Our findings, using a large multi-institutional sample of prospectively collected data, suggests that anemia should be regarded as an independent risk factor for perioperative and postoperative complications that deserves attention prior to elective spine surgery.

Comparison of CatWalk analysis and von Frey testing for pain assessment in a rat model of nerve crush plus inflammation.
Assessment of pain-related behavior and immunohistology of the dorsal root ganglion in a rat model. ⋯ Our results demonstrate that the CatWalk system is useful for the measurement of pain-related behavioral change in our rat model in which nociception was indicated at a cellular level. Although further studies are needed, we think that this system is a valid alternative method for the evaluation of models of lumbar disease in rodents.

A prospective, randomized experimental research. ⋯ Minocycline is neuroprotective and contributes to functional improvement after traumatic SCI by eliminating the destructive process of secondary injury. Having both satisfying anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects in experimental models, it promises to be of therapeutic use in human SCI.
