Because of its efficacy, oxaliplatin (OX) is increasingly used as a chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). Oxaliplatin-associated liver toxicity has been reported and can affect clinical practice, but studies on its prevalence and a full pathological description are lacking. The aims of this study were to fill this gap by providing, from a pathologist's perspective, a detailed assessment of the spectrum of hepatic lesions associated with OX, to suggest a scoring system to quantify them, and to investigate the protective effect of bevacizumab against OX-associated damage. ⋯ Pathologists should be aware of the distinctive lesions associated with OX and of their high prevalence. OX-related lesions are less frequent in patients treated with bevacizumab, suggesting that this drug has a preventive effect. Uniform criteria for diagnosis and grading of OX-associated lesions should help to include histological data in the optimal multidisciplinary management of CRLM.

To describe the histopathological features of a series of patients with ketamine-related cystitis. ⋯ Ketamine can lead to reactive urothelial changes that can mimic carcinoma in situ, but the long-term cancer risk remains unknown.

The major value of prognostic markers in potentially curable non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) should be to guide therapy after surgical resection. The prognostic significance of tumour-infiltrating macrophages, their growth factor, macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), and its receptor, colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF-1R), as well as natural killer cells and dendritic cells, is controversial. The aim of this study was to elucidate the prognostic significance of these markers in the epithelial and stromal compartments of NSCLC. ⋯ High density of stromal CD56+ cells is an independent factor associated with improved prognosis in resected NSCLC, suggesting that these cells mediate an antitumour immune response in the tumour stroma.

To compare the molecular profile of a series of sessile serrated adenomas (SSAs) and hyperplastic polyps (HPs), in order to distinguish these lesions, SSAs having a potential role in the genesis of serrated adenocarcinomas through a serrated pathway in which methylation plays a key role. ⋯ HPs and SSAs may be related lesions. However, at least right-sided SSAs differ from left-sided SSAs and HPs in the occurrence of MLH1 and p16 methylation, supporting the hypothesis that SSAs could be precursors of serrated adenocarcinomas.

To determine the reasons for diagnostic error by virtual slides which allow unsupervised study of diagnosis and error. ⋯ Tracking with virtual slides is a useful tool in studying diagnosis and error, which has the potential for use in training and assessment.
