To study programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, tumour-infiltrating T lymphocytes (TILs) and the molecular context in patients with early-stage squamous cell lung carcinomas (SCCs). ⋯ Our preliminary results support the use of digital CD8+ TILs scoring and targeted NGS alongside PD-L1 expression. The approach presented herein could help define patients with SCCs candidates to immune checkpoints inhibitors.

Gender dysphoria is a diagnosis whereby an individual identifies as the opposite gender. The management of patients seeking female-to-male (FTM) transition includes hormonal therapy and surgical intervention, including mastectomy. The aim of this study was to characterize the immunohistological findings in resection specimens from FTM patients. ⋯ We identified gynaecomastoid change at a significantly higher rate than previously reported in female patients. We support the continued gross and histological evaluation of FTM specimens in light of the identification of atypia in one case.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignancy with a variable clinical course. One of the established survival predictors in carcinomas in general is tumour grade; in OSCC, however, grading according to the World Health Organization (WHO) has no independent prognostic impact. Recently, a novel grading scheme associated with high impact on patient outcome has been proposed for squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. ⋯ We recapitulated and validated almost exactly the strong prognostic impact of a grading algorithm proposed recently for squamous cell carcinoma of the lung in OSCC. Our data may pave the way for a prognostically highly relevant future squamous cell carcinoma grading system broadly applicable in the aerodigestive tract.

Understanding the structure and function of the oropharynx is paramount for providing excellent patient care. In clinical oncology, the oropharynx is generally divided into four distinct components: (i) the base of the tongue; (ii) the soft palate; (iii) the palatine tonsillar fossa; and (iv) the pharyngeal wall. The oropharyngeal mucosa is distinct from other mucosal surfaces in the body, as it is composed of a reticulated epithelium with a discontinuous basement membrane, also known as lymphoepithelium. This review describes the anatomy, histology, immunology and surgical resection of the oropharynx as they relate to oncological care.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) prognosis depends upon lymph node metastasis (LNM). We have reported recently that tumour budding is a good predictive factor for LNM in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue and floor of the mouth (FOM). Our aim was to evaluate whether tumour budding is a good prognostic factor in OSCC. ⋯ The assessment of tumour budding is effective in predicting prognosis in cN0 early stage OSCC. In T1/2 stage and cN0 cancer, prophylactic neck dissection to prevent LNM should be considered when the tumour budding score regarding pre-operative biopsy specimens is intermediate or high.
