Isolated anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in patients aged fifty years: comparison of hamstring graft versus bone-patellar tendon-bone graft.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency contributes to symptomatic functional instability of the knee, regardless of age. We evaluated patient-reported clinical outcome, instrumental stability and prevalence of radiological osteoarthritis based on two homogenous patient samples aged 50 years, an average of three years after isolated ACL reconstruction. ⋯ Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction using either BPTB graft or hamstring graft in appropriately selected middle-aged patients results in patient satisfaction and good clinical results, with return to a reasonable level of activity regardless of surgical method and graft choice.

Evaluation of sonicate fluid cultures in comparison to histological analysis of the periprosthetic membrane for the detection of periprosthetic joint infection.
The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of sonicate fluid cultures (SFC) and the histological analysis of the periprosthetic membrane (PM) for the detection of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). ⋯ Our results show a high correlation between the microbiological and histological results. In our patient group sonication achieved the highest sensitivity out of all diagnostic methods and was more sensitive than conventional microbiological methods.

Locking-plate osteosynthesis versus intramedullary nailing for fixation of olecranon fractures: a biomechanical study.
Intramedullary nailing and locked plating for fixation of olecranon fractures has recently gained popularity. However, these two new technologies have not been compared for their biomechanical efficacy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical stability of two newly designed fracture fixation devices for treating olecranon fractures during dynamic continuous loading: the ION intramedullary locking nail and the LCP precontoured locking compression plate. ⋯ This study shows significantly less micromotion for the ION than for the LCP in treating oblique olecranon fractures after 300 cycles of dynamic loading. Both implant types could be appropriate surgical techniques for fixation of selected olecranon fractures and osteotomies.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics of lateral tibial plateau split-depression fractures (Schatzker type II). ⋯ Of all the 140 cases in this study, 10.7 % are located in the posterolateral region. An appropriate operative approach and fixation method should be selected based on the individual morphological characteristics of lateral plateau fractures.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of tobacco abuse in the consolidation of fractures. ⋯ Tobacco is confirmed as a deleterious factor for diaphyseal bone healing.
