The treatment of larger osteochondral lesions in the knee is still a clinical challenge. One promising strategy to overcome this problem could be surgical repair by using a cell-free multilayered nano-composite scaffold. ⋯ Osteochondral repair by implanting the MaioRegen® scaffold provides a successful osteoconduction and filling of the cartilage defect. However there is evidence for a limited repair cartilage tissue quality at 18 months after the surgery.

Although fall-induced fractures of elderly persons are a major problem, epidemiologic knowledge on their time trends is limited. We assessed the trends in fall-induced fractures of the calcaneus and foot in older Finns between 1970 and 2013. ⋯ The number of fall-induced fractures of the calcaneus and foot among Finns 50 years of age or older has risen sharply between 1970 and 2013 with a rate that cannot be explained merely by demographic changes. Further studies should examine the reasons for the rise and possibilities for fracture prevention.

To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of unstable proximal humeral fractures (PHFs) treated with a locking plate and fibular strut allograft. ⋯ For unstable proximal humerus fractures, particularly in elderly patients with severe osteoporosis or in younger patients with a four-part fracture, locking plate fixation with a fibular strut allograft provided rigid medial support and showed satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes.

The main purpose of the present study was to evaluate the clinical results and prognosis of pure elbow dislocations in the paediatric age group following non-surgical treatment. ⋯ Acute traumatic pure elbow dislocation in childhood is a very rarely seen emergency that can be treated safely with closed reduction combined long-arm plaster splinting and physical rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular complications constitute morbidity and mortality for hip fracture patients. Relatively little data exist exploring risk factors for post-operative complications. Using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement (ACS-NSQIP) database, we identified significant risk factors associated with adverse cardiac events in hip fracture patients and provide recommendations for practising orthopaedists. ⋯ Orthopaedic trauma surgeons should be aware of cardiac disease history and atherosclerotic conditions (PVD, stroke) in risk stratifying patients to prevent cardiac complications. Our recommendations to reduce cardiac events include simple pre-operative lab-work to full-fledged cardiac work-up and referrals to specific medicine disciplines based on the specific risk factors present.
