Comparative StudyLung ultrasound findings in meconium aspiration syndrome.
Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) is a rare and life-threatening neonatal lung injury induced by meconium in the lung and airways. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a quick, easy and cheap imaging technique that is increasingly being used in critical care settings, also for newborns. In this paper we describe ultrasound findings in MAS. ⋯ LUS images corresponded well with X-ray findings. In conclusion, we provide the first formal description of LUS findings in neonates with MAS. LUS is a useful and promising tool in the diagnosis and management of MAS, providing real-time bedside imaging, with the additional potential benefit of limiting radiation exposure in sick neonates.

Time outside targeted oxygen saturation range and retinopathy of prematurity.
To better understand the impact of hypoxia and hyperoxia on neonatal morbidity and mortality, we examined the number of hypoxia and hyperoxia events as well as percentage of time spent outside oxygen saturation targets in relationship to threshold retinopathy of prematurity (tROP) and mortality in preterm infants. ⋯ Information such as the duration and number of hypoxia and hyperoxia events, as well as total time outside the targeted saturation range, could be factored into assessing clinical interventions and research studies in the prevention, treatment and evaluation of neonatal outcomes.

Observational StudyAbdominal near-infrared spectroscopy in preterm infants: a comparison of splanchnic oxygen saturation measurements at two abdominal locations.
Splanchnic tissue oxygenation monitoring has been performed at both the liver and the infra-umbilical regions. It is unknown whether these measurements could be substituted one for the other when interpreting splanchnic oxygenation since they have not been measured simultaneously before. ⋯ Using NIRS as method for monitoring oxygen saturation simultaneously in both the liver and infra-umbilical regions is safe and feasible. Additionally, we demonstrated that values of liver and infra-umbilical oxygen saturation cannot be randomly substituted one for the other for the purpose of assessing splanchnic oxygenation.

Feeding practices and other risk factors for developing transfusion-associated necrotizing enterocolitis.
The objective of this study is to determine the incidence of and risk factors for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and transfusion-associated NEC (TANEC) in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants pre/post implementation of a peri-transfusion feeding protocol. ⋯ Pre-transfusion hematocrit is inversely related to risk of TANEC, which suggests that temporally maintaining a higher baseline hemoglobin in infants most at risk of NEC may be protective. The lack of difference in TANEC pre-/post-implementation of our peri-transfusion feeding protocol, despite an overall temporal decrease in NEC, suggests that other unmeasured interventions may account for the observed decreased incidence of NEC.

The myocardial function during and after whole-body therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a cohort study.
Therapeutic hypothermia has become standard treatment for moderate and severe neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) to reduce cerebral morbidity and mortality. The effect on the heart is incompletely explored. ⋯ Infants with HIE had similarly impaired myocardial function during days 1-3 whether normothermic or hypothermic. The myocardial function improved significantly at day 4 (after rewarming), approaching the day 3 levels in the healthy neonates.
