Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Safety and efficacy of long-acting risperidone in schizophrenia: a 12-week, multicenter, open-label study in stable patients switched from typical and atypical oral antipsychotics.
The safety and efficacy of the first long-acting injectable atypical antipsychotic, risperidone, were assessed in stable patients with schizophrenia switched from oral antipsychotic medications. ⋯ Switching treatment from oral antipsychotics to long-acting risperidone without an intervening period of oral risperidone was safe and well tolerated. Long-acting risperidone also significantly reduced the severity of symptoms in these stable patients with schizophrenia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Gepirone extended-release treatment of anxious depression: evidence from a retrospective subgroup analysis in patients with major depressive disorder.
To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of gepirone extended-release (ER) tablets in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and high ratings of anxiety (anxious depression). ⋯ Gepirone ER is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for patients with anxious depression.

Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Early clinical experience with risperidone long-acting injection: a prospective, 6-month follow-up of 100 patients.
The use of risperidone long-acting injection (RLAI) is reasonably well supported by controlled studies. Little is known about treatment outcomes in patients receiving RLAI in clinical practice. ⋯ RLAI was moderately effective in clinical practice as judged by attrition from treatment. CGI score changes and discharge rates also suggest moderate effectiveness. RLAI was well tolerated. Antipsychotic coprescription was infrequent.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a major new infectious disease of this century that is unique in its high morbidity and concentration in health care settings. We aimed to determine the level of psychological impact and coping styles among the medical staff in a primary health care setting. ⋯ SARS-related psychiatric and posttraumatic morbidities were present in the medical staff within a primary health care setting. Specific coping efforts, age, and marital status, not direct exposure factors, were associated with psychological morbidity. These findings provide possible foci for early identification and psychological support.

Voltage sensitive calcium channels (VSCCs) have unique structures and functions that distinguish them from other ion channels, especially the voltage sensitive sodium channels (VSSCs). Modulation of VSCCs by certain drugs such as pregabalin and gabapentin via binding to the alpha2delta subunits of VSCCs can lead to anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, and chronic pain-relieving actions.
