Children experiencing violence. II: Prevalence and determinants of corporal punishment in schools.
This study was undertaken to reveal the prevalence and determinants of corporal punishment in preparatory (middle) and secondary (high) schools in Alexandria. ⋯ This study indicates that corporal punishment in school is used extensively to discipline students whose behavior doesn't conform with the desired standard of educational institutions. However, since it is no longer perceived as a method of discipline, other alternatives can be used providing that teachers are equipped with the necessary skills for its application.

ReviewMethodological issues in assessing resilience in maltreated children.
Efforts to assess resilience in maltreated children reveal methodological difficulties in developing operational definitions of resilience. This paper discusses six methodological issues: (1) distinguishing between resilience and factors promoting or reducing resilience; (2) choosing sources of measures; (3) determining how many sources and measures to use; (4) selecting scoring criteria to indicate resilience; (5) determining when to measure resilience; and (6) examining the stability of resilience over time. ⋯ Understanding resilience in maltreated children is important for developing ways to promote competence in more vulnerable maltreated children. Although the classification of children as resilient depends on how resilience is defined, there is no consensus regarding operational definitions of resilience. By focusing more attention on the issue of resilience, research on maltreated children can help resolve methodological difficulties in defining and measuring the concept.

Historical ArticleThe Whiplash Shaken Infant Syndrome: has Caffey's syndrome changed or have we changed his syndrome?
The aim of this study is to examine the data used by John Caffey in his description of the Whiplash Shaken Infant Syndrome and compare it with recent data in an attempt to determine whether the syndrome that he described has changed, or if we have changed his syndrome into what we now call The Shaken Infant Syndrome. ⋯ Our findings demonstrate that not only have we changed the diagnostic parameters from Caffey's original Whiplash Shaken Infant Syndrome, but the syndrome has also changed to reflect changes in medical diagnosis and in our society.
