To evaluate the incidence of burnout in chairs of academic departments of ophthalmology, identify stressors, and propose methods for reducing and preventing burnout in our academic leaders. ⋯ The overall prevalence of burnout in chairs of academic departments of ophthalmology is similar to burnout rates seen in chairs of other academic departments. The MBI-HSS scores for ophthalmology chairs showed high levels of emotional exhaustion, moderate levels of depersonalization, and moderate levels of personal accomplishment. Because the cost of burnout can be high, both in terms of a chair's psychological well-being and the actual cost associated with replacing a chair, it is important that strategies are put in place to reduce burnout in our academic leaders.

Preoperative sub-Tenon's capsule injection of ropivacaine in conjunction with general anesthesia in retinal detachment surgery.
To evaluate the effects of preoperative sub-Tenon's capsule injection of ropivacaine on intraoperative hemodynamics, postoperative pain, nausea, and recovery in patients undergoing scleral buckling surgery under general anesthesia (GA). ⋯ Preoperative sub-Tenon's capsule injection of ropivacaine in scleral buckling surgery under GA lowers the intraoperative systolic BP, reduces the amount of inhalable sevoflurane needed, and enhances postoperative vigilance through reduction of pain and need of opioids.

To determine the cost-effectiveness of cataract surgery worldwide and to compare it with the cost-effectiveness of comparable medical interventions. ⋯ The cost-utility of cataract surgery varies substantially, depending how the benefit is assessed and on the duration of the assumed benefit. Cataract surgery is comparable in terms of cost-effectiveness to hip arthroplasty, is generally more cost-effective than either knee arthroplasty or defibrillator implantation, and is cost-effective when considered in absolute terms. The operation is considerably cheaper in Europe and Canada compared with the United States and is affordable in many developing countries, particularly India.

Clinical efficacy of moxifloxacin in the treatment of bacterial keratitis: a randomized clinical trial.
To determine the clinical efficacy and safety of moxifloxacin (1.0%) in patients with bacterial keratitis compared with patients treated with ofloxacin (0.3%) or fortified tobramycin (1.33%)/cephazolin (5%). ⋯ No difference in healing rate, cure rate, or complications between fortified cephazolin and tobramycin, ofloxacin, or moxifloxacin was seen in this study.
