Incorrect diagnosis of the uveitic masquerade syndromes (UMS) may have severe consequences. In this study, the frequency, clinical manifestations, and informative diagnostic tests for UMS are described. ⋯ UMS was diagnosed in 5% of the patients with uveitis at a tertiary center. Despite the variety of underlying disorders and different clinical presentations, a high frequency of malignant and vascular diseases was found. Awareness of the clinical manifestations of UMS and application of the correct diagnostic procedures should promote timely diagnosis and treatment, which are essential not only for visual acuity but also for the life of the patient.

To investigate outcomes of vitreoretinal surgery for complications of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). ⋯ Following surgery, retinal attachment and improved visual acuity were achieved in the majority of patients. Pre-existing pathology and postoperative complications may limit final vision in eyes with BRVO.

Clinical effects of oleoresin capsicum (pepper spray) on the human cornea and conjunctiva.
To evaluate the effects of oleoresin capsicum (OC) on the human cornea and conjunctiva and to test the effectiveness of topical anesthetics for relief of pain. ⋯ The predominant symptom after exposure to OC was pain. Topical flurbiprofen was not helpful in reducing symptoms of exposure, whereas topical proparacaine was effective in relieving pain in most subjects. Corneal sensitivity was dramatically reduced at 10 minutes after exposure and was improved after 1 hour. At 1 week, corneal sensation had returned to normal, as had slit-lamp appearance on all subjects examined.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Evaluation of the onset and duration of effect of azelastine eye drops (0.05%) versus placebo in patients with allergic conjunctivitis using an allergen challenge model.
The trial evaluated the effectiveness of the investigational antihistaminic and antiallergic compound Azelastine Eye Drops (AZE) in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis using an allergen challenge model. ⋯ Therapy of experimentally induced allergic conjunctivitis with AZE was highly effective, with an onset of action seen within 3 minutes and a duration of effect of at least 8 to 10 hours.

Effect of laser in situ keratomileusis on tear stability.
Patients frequently experience dry eye symptoms after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). The mechanisms that lead to these changes are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of LASIK on tear function. ⋯ Dry eye symptoms are common after myopic LASIK surgery. Laser in situ keratomileusis significantly altered the tear break-up time, Schirmer test values, and basal tear secretion. Patients with preexisting tear flow abnormality as demonstrated by Schirmer test values less than 10 mm are especially at risk of experiencing dry eye symptoms.
