Opioids can suppress testosterone in men, which can lead to extensive morbidity. Identifying risk factors for androgen deficiency in men using daily opioids could improve monitoring and safety. ⋯ Use of long-acting opioids is a key risk factor in the development of androgen deficiency. Dose was significantly associated with androgen deficiency, but more so for men on short-acting than on long-acting opioids.

Acute porphyrias in the USA: features of 108 subjects from porphyrias consortium.
Recent descriptions of the clinical and laboratory features of subjects with acute porphyrias in the US are lacking. Our aim was to describe clinical, biochemical, and genetic features of 108 subjects. ⋯ Acute porphyrias often remain undiagnosed for more than a decade after first symptoms develop. Intravenous hematin is the treatment of choice, both for treatment of acute attacks and for prevention of recurrent attacks.
