The treatment of peripheral nerve injuries has seen tremendous innovations over the past century. Dr Gotthelf Carl Huber, an American immigrant and early experimental pioneer in the field of peripheral nerve injury, created a foundation of scientific knowledge for these advancements. ⋯ Because of the external forces of the First World War, Dr Huber's focus returned to translational projects concentrated on the treatment of neuromas and war time peripheral nerve injuries. Huber's scientific impact in the field of peripheral nerve injury and repair came as a result of his incredible work ethic, mentorship, and tremendous leadership qualities; through this, his work still influences clinical practice today, a century later.

Grading systems, including the novel brain arteriovenous malformation endovascular grading scale (NBAVMES) and arteriovenous malformation embocure score (AVMES), predict embolization outcomes based on arteriovenous malformation (AVM) morphological features. The influence of hemodynamics on embolization outcomes remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the relationship between hemodynamics and embolization outcomes. ⋯ Preoperative hemodynamic factors have the potential to predict the outcomes of AVM embolization. A higher stasis index of the drainage vein, slower TRV, and shorter transnidal time may indicate a moderate blood flow status or favorable AVM characteristics that can potentially facilitate embolization.

Although risk factors for unplanned readmission after cervical spine surgery have been widely reported, less is known about how readmission itself affects patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Using the Quality Outcomes Database registry of patients undergoing elective cervical spine surgery, we sought to (1) determine the impact of unplanned readmission on PROMs and (2) compare the effect of specific readmission reasons on PROMs. ⋯ In patients undergoing elective cervical spine surgery, 90-day unplanned surgical and pain readmissions were associated with worse 12-month PROMs compared with patients with medical readmissions and no readmissions.

Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used for lower back pain management. The effect of these injections on lumbar decompression surgery outcomes is hitherto underexplored. The study objective was to determine the impact of ESIs on postoperative rates of medical and surgical complications and to define the appropriate interval before lumbar decompression surgery. ⋯ Preoperative ESI increases the risk of CSF leak and medical complications after lumbar decompression. Because these complications were significantly associated with ESIs given 1 to 30 days before surgery, avoiding ESIs at least 30 days before surgery may be advisable.
