Effect of Haishengsu on transplanted K562 and drug-resistant K562/ADM tumors: an experimental study.
To evaluate the effect of Haishengsu (HSS) on transplanted K562 and drug-resistant K562/ADM tumors. ⋯ Haishengsu inhibits the growth of transplanted K562 tumours in mice. It is also effective in suppressing the growth of drug-resistant K562/ADM tumors in this animal model.

Thyroid arterial embolization for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in a patient with thyrotoxic crisis.
We report a case of hyperthyroidism in a young woman caused by Graves' disease that was successfully treated with thyroid arterial embolization. ⋯ Thyroid arterial embolization is an effective means to treat refractory hyperthyroidism.

Cardiac troponin is specific to the myocardium and is a useful biomarker for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. Detection of elevated blood levels of troponin indicates damage to myocardial cells, but does not indicate the mechanism. Causes other than acute coronary syndromes and myocardial infarction can result in troponin elevation and these conditions frequently occur in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. The interpretation, clinical significance and appropriate management of an elevated troponin measurement in critically ill patients are uncertain. ⋯ Cardiac troponin elevation is common and observed in 40 to 50% of critically ill medical and surgical patients. Elevated levels appear to identify patients at increased risk for death in the intensive care unit or hospital setting. This finding, and its relation to myocardial infarction and acute coronary syndromes, requires prospective study to better understand the implications for diagnosis and management.

Atherosclerosis is the primary independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease, and Liver X Receptors (LXRalpha and LXRbeta) activation may play an anti-atherosclerosis effect. In this article, we summarize the current state of knowledge of roles of LXRs in physiology and homeostasis as well as the links between LXR action and atherosclerosis, and discuss the potential therapeutic effects of LXR agonists. ⋯ LXR beta-selective agonists and LXR modulators, which act as agonists in macrophages and induce cholesterol efflux while as antagonists of lipogenesis in the liver, are two critical and attractive approaches to treat atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases.
