A number of indicators suggest that the physician scientist career track is threatened. As such, it is an opportune time to evaluate current training models. Perspectives on physician scientist education and career path were surveyed in trainees at the University of Toronto, home to Canada's longest standing physician scientist training programs. ⋯ These findings indicate that while trainees at different stages consistently express career motivation, they identified concerns that are program- and training stage-specific. These concerns mirror those highlighted in the medical education literature regarding threats to the physician scientist career path. Understanding these different and changing perspectives and exploring those differences could form an important basis for trainee program improvements both nationally and internationally.

The 2013 joint Canadian Society of Clinician Investigators (CSCI)-Clinical Investigator Trainee Association of Canada/Association des cliniciens-chercheurs en formation du Canada (CITAC/ACCFC) annual general meeting(AGM) was held in Ottawa, September 2013. The symposium focused on "Applications of the 'omics' to Clinical Practice", with presentations from Drs. William T. ⋯ Also presented at the conference was research by clinician investigator (CI) trainees from across Canada; ie., those enrolled in MD/MSc, MD/PhD or Clinician Investigator Program(CIP) programs. Canadian trainees' research extended beyond the pillar of biomedical research, covering the spectrum between basic and clinical research, with a focus on the causes of significant morbidity and mortality for Canadians, including cancers, infectious diseases and other maladies. It is this research that we have summarized in this review.

The purpose of this review is to consider the state of oxidative stress, failure of the antioxidant systems and mitochondrial failure as the main physiopathological mechanisms leading to multiple organ dysfunction during sepsis. ⋯ Knowledge of the molecular processes associated with the development of oxidative stress should facilitate the development of effective therapies and better prognosis for patients with sepsis and organ dysfunction.

Metabolomics in critical care medicine: a new approach to biomarker discovery.
To present an overview and comparison of the main metabolomics techniques (1H NMR, GC-MS, and LC-MS) and their current and potential use in critical care medicine. ⋯ Metabolomics is a powerful tool that has strong potential to impact diagnosis and prognosis and to examine responses to treatment in critical care medicine through diagnostic and prognostic biomarker and biopattern identification.

Studies have demonstrated gender differences in the burden of cardiovascular outcomes for patients with dyslipidemia. Progress in identification of the sex/gender composition in Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) is crucial for understanding the distribution of therapeutics effectiveness in the population according to sex/gender. The purpose of this study was to investigate the evolving pattern of sex/gender disparity in participants of RCTs on statins between 1990 and 2010. A secondary objective was to evaluate changes in the pattern of the average age of participants of RCTs on statins between 1990 and 2010. ⋯ This study demonstrates significant progress in the inclusion of women in RCTs on statins. This finding reflects the efforts of different agencies and groups to increase the representation of women in clinical trials.
