Clinical value of right hemicolectomy for appendiceal carcinoids using pathologic criteria.
Appendiceal carcinoids (AC) are usually adequately treated by appendectomy. The European Neuroendocrine Tumours Society (ENETS) has recently reconsidered the previous pathologic criteria to identify patients at high risk of extra-appendiceal disease, who are thought to require right hemicolectomy (RHC). ⋯ Applying previous and currently introduced pathologic criteria, 25% of high-risk patients with AC had identifiable extra-appendiceal disease following RHC that might be not detected following the recently introduced ENETS criteria.

Serum thyroid hormones levels are significantly decreased in septic neonates with poor outcome.
The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the effects of thyroid hormone levels on the sepsis criteria and mortality in septic newborns. This study was performed at the Firat University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. A group of septic newborns and a control group of healthy non-infected newborns were evaluated. ⋯ Serum TT(3), TT(4) levels of septic newborns were significantly decreased with respect to those of healthy newborns at onset and serum TT(4) levels was increased significantly after antibiotic therapy. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first study to compare thyroid hormone levels in a large number of septic newborns and a healthy group. Our findings suggest that before and after treatment of neonatal sepsis a significant change is realized in thyroid hormone levels.

Impaired amyloid β-degrading enzymes in brain of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
Enzymes that degrade the amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) are important regulators of cerebral Aβ levels. High level of Aβ was found in the brain of diabetic patients and diabetic animals. Aim of the study was to investigate whether activities of Aβ-degrading enzymes neprilysin (NEP), endothelin-converting enzyme 1 (ECE-1) and insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) were impaired in the brain of diabetic rats. ⋯ The hippocampus of diabetic rats showed significant decrease in mRNA levels of NEP and ECE-1 and moderate increase in IDE mRNA level. The cortex of diabetic rats showed slight decrease in mRNA levels of the three enzymes. The results indicated that the three Aβ-degrading enzymes were damaged to different extents in the brain of diabetic rats, and impairment of ECE-1 and IDE partly contributed to the elevated Aβ(1-40) levels in brain of diabetic rats.

Psychiatric and neuropsychological changes in growth hormone-deficient patients after traumatic brain injury in response to growth hormone therapy.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been recently recognized as a risk factor for cognitive impairment and hypopituitarism, presented most frequently with GH deficiency (GHD). GHD is associated not only with changes in body composition, but also with impaired quality of life, cognitive dysfunctions and some psychiatric sequelae, usually classified as "depression" or "atypical depression". The impact of GH therapy on mental status in TBI patients is still unknown. ⋯ GH-deficient TBI patients are depressed and have cognitive impairment. GH therapy induced reduction of depression, social dysfunction, and certain cognitive domains. Our preliminary data support the necessity of conducting randomized placebo-controlled trials on the effects of GH therapy on neuropsychological and psychiatric status in GHD TBI patients.
