Comparative StudyPrediction of resting energy expenditure in severely obese Italian males.
The objectives of the present study were to develop and cross-validate new equations for predicting resting energy expenditure (PREE) in severely obese Italian males, and to compare their accuracy with those of the Harris-Benedict, WHO/ FAO/UNU, Huang, Owen, Mifflin, Livingston, Nelson, Bernstein, and Cunnimgham equations in order to predict resting energy expenditure (REE), using the Bland-Altman method. One hundred and sixty-four severely obese males [mean body mass index (BMI): 45.4 kg/m2; 50.2% fat mass), aged 20 to 65 yr participated in this study. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry and body composition by bioelectrical analysis. ⋯ The Mifflin, Livingston, and Nelson equations showed a mean PREE underestimation >7% (p<0.001) and PREE was accurate in less than 25% of subjects. The Bernstein and Cunningham equations showed a greater PREE underestimation (>22%, p<0.001) in more than 85% of subjects. The new prediction equations allow an accurate estimation of REE in groups of severely obese males and result in lower mean differences and lower limits of agreement between PREE and MREE than the commonly used equations.

Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations in obese women: their clinical significance and relationship with anthropometric and body composition variables.
Obesity is associated with low concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D]. However, conflicting results have been found regarding the relationship of 25(OH) D with anthropometric and adiposity parameters. The aim of our study was to analyze the association between 25(OH) D and body fat (BF) in a homogeneous cohort of non-obese, obese, and morbidly obese Caucasian women. The study was performed in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city adjacent to Barcelona with a latitude of 41 degrees, 22 minutes, and 5 seconds north. ⋯ 25(OH) D concentrations are associated with body composition variables especially by BF, independently of seasonal variability. Therefore, body adiposity should be considered when assessing vitamin D requirements in obese patients.

Controlled Clinical TrialEffect of barbiturate coma on adrenal response in patients with traumatic brain injury.
Barbiturate coma is the second tier measure recommended by guidelines to treat post-traumatic refractory intracranial pressure. Systemic hypotension is its most important side effect. Recent evidence suggests that low-dose corticosteroid therapy may be used in a subset of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) to avoid hypotension. We evaluated adrenal function in TBI patients undergoing barbiturate coma, as treatment of their refractory intracranial hypertension. ⋯ Patients with TBI treated with barbiturate coma are at higher risk of developing adrenal insufficiency. This subset of patients presented higher requirements of vasoactive support to avoid hypotension. In these patients corticosteroid therapy may have potential therapeutic implications to treat hemodynamic instability.

Comparative StudyBone mineral content and bone mineral density at lumbar spine and forearm in Chinese girls aged 6-18 years.
We investigated the age-related bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD) and the tempo of growth in BMC and BMD at lumbar spine and forearm in 455 Chinese girls aged 6-18 yr. BMC and BMD at the anteroposterior lumbar spine (LS), the left forearm (radius+ulna ultradistal, R+UUD) and one-third region (R+U1/3) were measured using a dual-energy X-ray bone densitometer (DXA). BMC and BMD exhibited different change patterns with the age changes. ⋯ In conclusion, our study showed that Tanner stage had a significant positive association with BMC and BMD of the lumbar spine and forearm. The differences were found in the growth tempo of BMC and BMD within a region and between the spine and forearm. Both BMD and BMC were recommended to evaluate the bone health in children and adolescents.

Islet cell, thyroid, adrenal and celiac disease related autoantibodies in patients with Type 1 diabetes from Sri Lanka.
The prevalence of islet cell, thyroid, adrenal and celiac disease related autoantibodies in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (Type 1 DM) from Sri Lanka is described. ⋯ Diabetes associated autoantibodies were detected in the majority of Type 1 DM subjects, suggesting a major role for autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of Type 1 DM in Sri Lankans. The prevalence of TgAb and TPOAb in Type 1 DM subjects and non-diabetic controls was relatively high and similar in both groups.
