ReviewThe effect of zoledronic acid on the fracture risk in men with osteoporosis.
Prospective, placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized studies on osteoporosis treatment with bisphosphonates in men are rare. This review focuses on a recent trial and compares the results with other studies. ⋯ Comparative clinical studies are recommended, where the benefits of different bisphosphonates are compared to each other under the same experimental conditions.

Decrease in pituitary apparent diffusion coefficient in normal appearing brain correlates with hypopituitarism following traumatic brain injury.
Following traumatic brain injury (TBI), there may be persistent pituitary deficits despite the presence of normal conventional magnetic resonance (MR) images. Little is known about the association of microstructural changes in the pituitary with pituitary function in TBI patients with normal appearing brain on conventional MR images. Our aim was to quantify changes in pituitary apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of normal appearing brain in human traumatic brain injury. ⋯ Our findings suggest that pituitary ADC is a sensitive and independent marker of pituitary damage following traumatic insult, which is useful to detect the microstructural damage in pituitary in normal appearing brain.

The Vitamin D paradox: bone density testing in females aged 45 to 74 did not increase over a ten-year period despite a marked increase in testing for vitamin D.
To determine whether increased vitamin D testing resulted in improved osteoporosis detection in Australian females aged 45-74 yr. ⋯ This study demonstrates that improved detection of vitamin D deficiency is not being translated into better detection in at-risk women of the consequences of vitamin D deficiency on target organs such as bone. This failure to translate rising awareness and better detection of vitamin D deficiency into physiological outcomes is a massive missed opportunity for improved bone health and reduced fracture risk.We propose that clinical practice guidelines be introduced not only for the purpose of diagnosis and testing for vitamin D, but to include recommendations for bone health testing in at-risk individuals.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and its association with vitamin D deficiency.
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a widespread disorder characterized by recurrent, partial or complete episodes of apnea due to upper airway tract obstruction during sleeping period. Deficiency of vitamin D has roles in development of many diseases. Association between presence and severity of OSAS and vitamin D has recently gained research interest. ⋯ We found that when the severity of OSAS increases, 25(OH)D deficiency becomes more pronounced.

Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy and safety of DT56a compared to hormone therapy in Greek post-menopausal women.
Hormone therapy (HT) is the treatment of choice for the alleviation of menopausal symptoms; concerns, however, about its concomitant long-term health risks have limited its use. DT56a is a unique enzymatic isolate of soybeans. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of DT56a, compared to HT, in symptomatic post-menopausal women. ⋯ DT56a decreased menopausal symptoms significantly and in the same degree as HT.
