The colon has an important role in managing nitrogenous waste products, electrolytes, and mineral balance during kidney diseases. However, colonic microbiota produces uremic toxins, such as indoxyl sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate, in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, which due to their proinflammatory properties contribute to CKD progression. Conversely, in acute renal injury patients, intestinal microbiota could reduce inflammation by secreting short-chain fatty acids and inducing a renal protective immune response. However, since the intestines are the most frequently affected organ in advanced sepsis, colonic microbiota can also represent a negative factor for kidney health in this scenario. ⋯ In the present review, the main characteristics of kidney-gut crosstalk are described.

Early use of high-dose vitamin C is beneficial in treatment of sepsis.
Vitamin C has shown benefits in patients with sepsis in addition to standard therapy recently. However, further evidence is required to verify the efficacy of vitamin C in clinical practice. This study aimed to investigate the effect of adjunctive intravenous high-dose vitamin C treatment on hospital mortality in patients with sepsis. ⋯ The early treatment of sepsis with intravenous high-dose vitamin C in combination with standard therapy showed a beneficial effect on sepsis, in terms of the reduced 28-day mortality, the decreased SOFA score, and the increased clearance rate of procalcitonin.

Internet of Things is a fast growing technology and a network of devices in which everything (smart objects or smart devices) are associated to the internet for effective exchange of information between these connected objects. Internet of Things (IoT) serves as a method for healthcare and acts as an essential part in broad range of real-time healthcare monitoring applications. Previous work shows networked sensor devices, either equipped on the body or embedded inside living being or a camera, make possible in gathering real-time information to evaluate physical and mental health state of the patient by collecting body temperature, blood pressure, patient's image, etc. ⋯ The proposed scheme requires implementation with the authentication protocol. It is important to satisfy the major parameters of security: confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and access control. In this paper our focus is on the authentication of devices.
