Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between the induction of reactive oxygen species and the ability of cells to metabolize them. Numerous markers can be used to assess the level of oxidative stress. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH) and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) are some of them. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of TDH and IMA, which are indicators of oxidative stress, in older patients with osteosarcopenia (OS). ⋯ In our study, the role of oxidative stress in OS was demonstrated by using TDH as an oxidative stress parameter.

Early identification of liver fibrosis is essential for the prognosis of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), particularly in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Here, we explored the association of chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) and liver fibrosis in T2DM-MAFLD patients. ⋯ Serum CHI3L1 demonstrates an association with significant liver fibrosis. High serum levels of CHI3L1 may indicate the existence of significant liver fibrosis in T2DM-MAFLD patients.

Malnutrition poses a significant global health challenge, affecting various age groups, with infants under 6 months being particularly vulnerable. Vitamin B12, an essential micronutrient critical for neurological development, has been identified as a key player in the overall health of both mothers and infants. ⋯ The findings emphasize the importance of targeted interventions addressing maternal and infant nutrition, with a focus on ensuring adequate vitamin B12 levels.

Three Yersinia species were identified from samples of drinking water from diverse geographic regions of Ireland. Conventional commercial biochemical identification systems classified them as Yersinia enterocolitica. Since this organism is the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in some countries, further investigation was warranted. The aim of the study was to provide a microbial characterisation of three Yersinia species, to determine their pathogenicity, and to review the incidence rate of Yersinia enterocolitica detection in our region. ⋯ Our analysis of these three isolates deemed them to be Yersinia species not known currently to be pathogenic, but determining this necessitated the use of next-generation sequencing and advanced bioinformatics. Our work highlights the importance of having this technology available to public laboratories, either locally or in a national reference laboratory. The introduction of molecular technologies for the detection of Yersinia species may increase the rate of detections. Accurate identification of significant pathogens in environmental, public health and clinical microbiology laboratories is critically important for the protection of society.

Multi-disciplinary Meetings (MDM) play a crucial role in complex patient care, involving input from various specialties to formulate evidence-based management plans. However, traditional unidirectional approaches and reliance on manual processes have led to inefficiencies in the MDM pathway. ⋯ Microsoft Office Forms proved to be a valuable and adaptable tool for MDMs, offering benefits such as streamlined information gathering, real-time collaboration, and scalability. The study highlights the potential of existing tools within Microsoft licenses for healthcare process optimisation, providing a cost-effective and customisable solution for MDM agendas. While recognising some limitations, the study concludes that leveraging Microsoft Office Forms can significantly improve system efficiency in a multi-disciplinary setting.
