Hydatid disease is rare in Ireland and its incidence and prevalence are unknown. Most cases are diagnosed by a combination of clinical findings, morphological features on imaging and by serological testing. ⋯ The diagnosis of this rare disease requires a high index of suspicion. Treatment is primarily surgical, with a role for antihelminthic agents.

Risperidone compared with olanzapine in a naturalistic clinical study in Ireland: a cost analysis.
Risperidone and olanzapine are thought to have similar clinical effects. This study was designed to compare costs of treatment. ⋯ Risperidone was associated with significantly lower drug treatment costs.

Hereditary pancreatitis is an important cause of chronic pancreatitis, which may result in endocrine and exocrine failure. This may necessitate simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant (SPK). Bladder drainage of the exocrine secretions may cause problems. ⋯ Enteric-drained pancreas transplantation is a successful treatment for exocrine as well as endocrine pancreatic failure and should be considered as a treatment option in patients with chronic pancreatitis.

Endoscopic surveillance of patients with Barrett's oesophagus is recommended to detect early carcinoma. The practice patterns of endoscopists since the publication of more recent management guidelines remain unknown. ⋯ Most endoscopists in Ireland do not adhere to recent guidelines in their management of Barrett's oesophagus. Surgical endoscopists perform surveillance more frequently than their medical colleagues.
