Sleep apnea studies in an infant with congenital primary hypoventilation ("Ondine's curse").
Recurrent apneic episodes were typically associated with sleep, not wakefulness, in an infant with congenital primary hypoventilation ("Ondine's Curse"). Quiet sleep (SLQ) was shown to constitute a higher risk condition than active sleep (SLA) at the ages she was recorded polygraphically (2-4 months old). ⋯ Necropsy revealed bronchopulmonary dysplastic fibrosis and cor pulmonale. Neuropathologic examination failed to reveal pathologic changes in the brainstem.

EEG alpha coherence and slow alpha power were recorded from frontal and occipital derivations during relaxation or the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique in fifteen subjects. Subjects were tested before and after a two-week baseline period in which half practiced twice daily relaxation and half did not change their schedule. ⋯ After the two-week TM technique period, subjects showed a significant increase in frontal alpha coherence above a 0.95 threshold. Frontal alpha coherence was found to be a more sensitive discriminator of the TM technique than alpha power, which may clarify previously reported nonsignificant EEG differences between the TM technique and general relaxation.

Clomipramine and amitriptyline in the treatment of severe pain.
Clomipramine is the most potent 5-HT reuptake blockade agent among the antidepressants. A comparison between the effect of clomipramine and a less powerful 5-HT reuptake blockade agent (amitriptyline) could test the hypothesis that brain 5-HT is a mediator of pain sensation. ⋯ Clomipramine was better tolerated. The results support the hypothesis that in certain pain situations, clomipramine exerts a beneficial effect, not only because of its effect on the depression and anxiety level of the patient, but also via its effects on the 5-HT brain system.
