Meta AnalysisThe effect of occupational exposure to noise on ischaemic heart disease, stroke and hypertension: A systematic review and meta-analysis from the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates of the Work-Related Burden of Disease and Injury.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are developing joint estimates of the work-related burden of disease and injury (WHO/ILO Joint Estimates), with contributions from a large number of individual experts. Evidence from mechanistic data suggests that occupational exposure to noise may cause cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this paper, we present a systematic review and meta-analysis of parameters for estimating the number of deaths and disability-adjusted life years from CVD that are attributable to occupational exposure to noise, for the development of the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates. ⋯ CRD42018092272.

Spatiotemporal variations in the association between particulate matter and airborne bacteria based on the size-resolved respiratory tract deposition in concentrated layer feeding operations.
Bacterial loading aggravates the health and environmental hazards of particulate matter (PM), particularly in concentrated animal feeding operations. Understanding the association between PM and airborne bacteria is conducive to accurately assessing occupational exposure, providing fundamental data for exposure mitigation via engineering solutions, and providing information regarding the physical properties influencing the transmission of airborne microorganisms at emission sources. In this work, we conducted a joint study to systematically determine the concentrations and size distributions of PM and airborne bacteria, and establish the quantitative relationship between PM and airborne bacteria in laying hen houses. ⋯ The size distributions of PM and airborne bacteria indicated that the mass concentration of large particles decreased with increasing outside temperature, while the concentration of airborne bacteria loaded on the small particles increased with increasing outside temperature. The results indicated that particles with diameters ranging from 2.1 to 4.7 μm carried the most airborne bacteria. Therefore, particles with diameters ranging from 2.1 to 4.7 μm should be the focus of future experimental research on occupational exposure, air quality improvement, and the airborne transmission of PM and airborne microorganisms originating from concentrated layer feeding operations.

Meta AnalysisThe effect of occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors on osteoarthritis of hip or knee and selected other musculoskeletal diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis from the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates of the Work-related Burden of Disease and Injury.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are developing joint estimates of the work-related burden of disease and injury (WHO/ILO Joint Estimates), with contributions from a large network of experts. Evidence from mechanistic data suggests that occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors may cause selected other musculoskeletal diseases, other than back or neck pain (MSD) or osteoarthritis of hip or knee (OA). In this paper, we present a systematic review and meta-analysis of parameters for estimating the number of disability-adjusted life years from MSD or OA that are attributable to occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors, for the development of the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates. ⋯ Overall, for both outcomes, the main body of evidence was assessed as being of low quality. Occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors increased the risk of acquiring MSD and of acquiring OA of knee or hip. We judged the body of human evidence on the relationship between exposure to occupational ergonomic factors and MSD as "limited evidence of harmfulness" and the relationship between exposure to occupational ergonomic factors and OA also as "limited evidence of harmfulness". These relative risks might perhaps be suitable as input data for WHO/ILO modelling of work-related burden of disease and injury. Ambient air pollution exposure during the late gestational period is linked with lower placental iodine load in a Belgian birth cohort.
Adequate intake of iodine is required for the production of thyroid hormones and contributes in pregnant women to a healthy brain development and growth in their offspring. To date, some evidence exists that fine particulate air pollution is linked with the fetal thyroid hormone homeostasis. However, possible effects of air pollutants on the placental iodine storage have not been investigated so far. ⋯ In utero exposure to particulate matter during the third trimester of pregnancy is linked with a lower placental iodine load. Furthermore, the effect of air pollution on cord blood FT4 levels was partially mediated by the placental iodine load.

Air pollution during infancy and lung function development into adolescence: The GINIplus/LISA birth cohorts study.
Limited evidence exists on how air pollution exposure during infancy, i.e. the first year of life, may affect lung function development into adolescence. ⋯ Infancy exposure to higher air pollution may reduce lung function development up to adolescence, with airway size more affected than lung volume restriction. The potential modifying effects of maternal age, asthmatic status of children and breastfeeding warrant further exploration.
