20 patients with neuropathic pain syndromes due to tumor-infiltration, who had not responded to conventional analgesics including strong opioids, received additional combination anti-convulsant and anti-depressant treatment. Pain amelioration occurred in all patients within median 46 h, and maximum effect was encountered within one week. ⋯ Replacement by another type of anticonvulsants in 6 cases with either no response or intolerable side effects was successful in 5 patients, both in terms of efficacy and tolerability. One patient stopped taking AD/AC after 48 h.

Treatment of severe aplastic anemia (SAA) in Europe between 1970 and 1986 is reviewed. 487 patients received an HLA-identical BMT: results are encouraging and currently suggest a 65% survival. However, many patients cannot be offered this procedure because of the absence of an appropriate donor. ⋯ Immunosuppression (IS) was given to 509 patients: 50% of these survive. Some mechanisms regulating in vitro hematopoiesis are discussed, together with their relevance in the treatment of SAA.

From 1970 to 1977 an artificial gut was used in 1350 patients suffering from gastrointestinal cancer. This type of prolonged intestinal assistance was recognized to be an important adjuvant in anticancer therapy with indications prior to, during and following the traditional course of treatment. ⋯ The indications for its use are multiplying. In 54% of the cases parenteral nutrition is associated with therapy of the curative type and this percentage is continuously increasing.
