To assess whether a case-based cancer pain education module would lead to acquisition and retention of knowledge and attitudes at the graduate nursing student level. ⋯ Early cancer pain education for nurses may play an important role in improving pain control for patients with cancer. Although this study did not evaluate the application of cancer pain knowledge to clinical practice, the results support the notion that advanced practice nurses can improve their cancer pain management knowledge and attitudes while in training. One implication is that this shift in attitudes and knowledge will translate to effective management of pain in varied healthcare settings.

Online exclusive: patient and surgeon decision making regarding surgery for advanced cancer.
To describe a program of research related to outcomes of palliative surgery and focus on one phase of this research involving decision making by patients and surgeons considering surgery for advanced disease. ⋯ Patients undergoing surgery for advanced disease require expert nursing care to address quality-of-life concerns. Further research is needed in this area.

Online exclusive: behavioral adjustment of children and adolescents with cancer: teacher, parent, and self-report.
To describe behavioral adjustment in children and adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and to determine whether behavioral adjustment is correlated with cognitive and academic abilities. ⋯ Findings suggest the need for ongoing assessment of behavioral adjustment and cognitive and academic abilities of children with ALL. Behavioral interventions that target at-risk mannerisms, such as somatization, depression, anxiety, and social stress, are needed. Central nervous system treatment may contribute to behavioral adjustment problems, as well as to cognitive and academic problems. Strategies to improve academic abilities also may have a positive effect on behavioral adjustment.

Comparative StudyKnowledge and attitudes about cancer pain management: a comparison of oncology and nononcology nurses.
To obtain information about the knowledge and attitudes of Utah nurses concerning cancer pain management. ⋯ Adoption of evidence-based practice requires ongoing education of nurses and support from nursing colleagues, nursing administration, and associated healthcare providers. Data from this study can be used to design a curriculum involving content about cancer pain management. All members of the healthcare team should be supported in practicing the correct principles of cancer pain management in actual practice.
