Comparative StudyEighteen sensations after breast cancer surgery: a comparison of sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary lymph node dissection.
To evaluate prevalence, severity, and level of distress of 18 sensations at 3-15 days (baseline), 3 months, and 6 months after breast cancer surgery; to compare sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) to SLNB with immediate or delayed axillary lymph node dissection; to evaluate the Breast Sensation Assessment Scale(c) (BSAS(c)) for reliability and validity. ⋯ Nurses should be familiar with prevalent sensations patients experience after SLNB and axillary lymph node dissection so they can provide education and support.

Nursing implications of mylotarg: a novel antibody-targeted chemotherapy for CD33+ acute myeloid leukemia in first relapse.
To review the nursing implications of gemtuzumab ozogamicin (Mylotarg(r), CMA-676, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, PA), a novel monoclonal antibody-targeted chemotherapy agent for relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). ⋯ Nurses must be knowledgeable about gemtuzumab ozogamicin preparation and administration, patient selection and monitoring, and intervention procedures. This knowledge is necessary to accurately inform patients and their families of the possible course of treatment and potential side effects.

Comparative StudyComparing the results of coagulation tests on blood drawn by venipuncture and through heparinized tunneled venous access devices in pediatric patients with cancer.
To compare the accuracy of three coagulation tests (prothrombin time [PT], activated partial thromboplastin time [aPTT], and fibrinogen [FBG]) performed on blood samples collected through heparinized tunneled venous access devices (TVADs) with those from venipuncture. ⋯ Nurses who have been persuaded by patients or parents to withdraw blood samples for coagulation indicators from a TVAD rather than from a venipuncture should have access to this research-based information that the three indicators, particularly aPTT, differ significantly from each other as to make it unreliable and potentially unsafe to sample blood from a TVAD to assess coagulation.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialEffects of an opioid taper algorithm in hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant recipients.
To examine the effects of an opioid taper algorithm on the length of taper, pain levels, withdrawal symptoms, and satisfaction with pain management in hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant (HPCT) recipients and nurse documentation of patient response to taper. ⋯ Use of an opioid taper algorithm may promote consistency of tapering practice.
