Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialRandomized clinical trial of chlorhexidine versus placebo for prevention of oral mucositis in patients receiving chemotherapy.
To test the effectiveness of a nurse-initiated systematic oral hygiene teaching program-PRO-SELF: Mouth Aware (PSMA)-in conjunction with two mouthwashes (0.12% chlorhexidine or sterile water) in preventing chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. ⋯ A nursing prescription of a systematic oral hygiene program using water as a mouth rinse is cost efficient and may be effective in preventing oral mucositis.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialThe effect of death education on attitudes of hospital nurses toward care of the dying.
To determine the effect of death education on attitudes and behavioral intentions of experienced nurses who care for hospitalized terminally ill adults and their families and to determine the influence of death education on nurses' self-perceptions regarding supervision or peer review of their behavior toward dying patients and their families. ⋯ Death education for nurses, especially in areas of communication with patients and families, potentially may affect terminal care. The significant influence on subjective norms suggests a need to expand death education to include all healthcare personnel.

Coping strategies of family caregivers of home hospice patients with cancer.
To identify the use and effectiveness of coping strategies identified by family caregivers of patients with terminal cancer. ⋯ To provide guidance and support to family caregivers, nurses need to explore the meanings that caregivers attach to the caregiving experience and assist caregivers in reframing these meanings in a positive light.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialComparison of central venous catheter dressings in bone marrow transplant recipients.
To determine the effect of two central venous catheter (CVC) dressing protocols on catheter-related infections in hospitalized patients with long-term tunneled catheters undergoing an autologous bone marrow transplant (BMT), to determine the prevalence of long-term CVC-related infections in this population, and to identify other factors in the study sample related to long-term CVC infection. ⋯ For adults undergoing autologous BMT, either DSGD or transparent CVC dressing can be used safely based on patient preference and skin tolerance to the dressing material.

To identify needs of family caregivers of home hospice patients with cancer. ⋯ To provide guidance and support to family caregivers, nurses should assess the needs of caregivers and tailor interventions to meet those needs. Nurses also should facilitate the development of a social, volunteer, and professional support network.
