Case ReportsTransient bilateral osteoporosis of the hip in pregnancy. A case report and review of the literature.
Osteoporosis of the hip is a rare complication of pregnancy, the diagnosis of which can only be determined by radiologic means. Differentiation between osteonecrosis and osteoporosis remains problematic in some cases. ⋯ Treatment of osteoporosis of the hip in pregnancy should be conservative including physical therapy, restricted weight bearing and analgetic therapy. We report an unusual case of bilateral transient osteoporosis of the hip in pregnancy.

Experience with isotonic 2.2% glycine as distension medium for hysteroscopic endomyometrial resection.
The feasibility of performing hysteroscopic endomyometrial resection using isotonic 2.2% glycine as distension medium was studied in 181 consecutive operations. A standard continuous flow loop-resectoscope was used. Distension was achieved by means of a gravity-fed system and glycine flowed out under its own pressure. ⋯ Only in patients with >1 liter glycine absorption was there a significant decrease in serum sodium level (mean 9 mmol/l), while serum osmolality remained normal. Apart from 1 case of transient nausea, these patients had no sequelae. We experienced isotonic 2.2% glycine as a useful and safe distending medium for operative hysteroscopy.

Case Reports Comparative StudyCT and MRI findings in a case of pelvic schwannoma.
We compared the diagnostic utility of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a patient with a pelvic schwannoma. This 46-year-old woman was admitted for evaluation of a retroperitoneal pelvic mass and myoma uteri. The retroperitoneal pelvic mass had been detected by a CT scan at a routine health examination. ⋯ Small areas of low intensity inside the tumor were observed on T2-weighted images. Histological examination revealed a typical schwannoma of mixed Antoni type A and type B. These findings indicate that both MRI and CT are useful for diagnosis of retroperitoneal schwannomas.

Endothelial cell markers and fibrinopeptide A to D-dimer ratio as a measure of coagulation and fibrinolysis balance in normal pregnancy.
Changes in hemostatic system were evaluated in healthy pregnant women. ⋯ Thrombin-antithrombin III complexes, fibrinopeptide A and D-dimer were higher during pregnancy. The endothelial cell markers, fibronectin and tissue factor, remained within the normal reference values in the healthy nonpregnant population. This result suggests no endothelial injury and shows no activation of extrinsic coagulation pathway during pregnancy. The balance coagulation/fibrinolysy is maintained during pregnancy and delivery, as shown by the ratio fibrinopeptide A/D-dimer, however, a tendency towards coagulation process is developed in the early puerperium.

Validation of a laboratory method of measuring postpartum blood loss.
Laboratory methods give more accurate measurement of blood loss in the postpartum period than visual estimation. In order to evaluate a laboratory method used to quantify blood loss postpartum, blood lost at gynecological operations was collected in a measuring bottle. ⋯ The study shows that the method provides a reliable and accurate means of measuring blood loss. The error in each case was less than 10% with an intraclass correlation coefficient of almost 1.
