When it comes to firearm fatalities, the main goal of forensic analysis is to distinguish firearm suicides from homicides and accidents. Apart from the location of the entrance wound, wound path trajectory and gunshot residue, blood stain pattern analysis of gunshot-related backspatter on the hands of the victim can be an essential tool not only to determine which hand was holding the firearm, but also to reconstruct the position from which a weapon was fired. We present a case of a 90-year-old man, who was found dead in his house. ⋯ We could reconstruct that the man held the weapon in his right hand, using the left hand to stabilise the firearm and the right thumb to pull the trigger. A contact shot to the right temple led to central regulatory failure due to extensive brain injury. The manner of death was concluded to be a suicide.

Discovery of a fracture of the hyoid bone during forensic autopsy is a feature that raises suspicions of constriction of the neck. Studies have shown the influence of gender and build of the individual on the morphology of this bone. Our aims were to confirm these findings and to develop an experimental protocol for simulating manual strangulation in order to determine the force required to fracture the hyoid bone and the influence of anthropometric parameters on this force. ⋯ Fracture occurred at a mean force of 30.55 N (±18.189). Multiple linear regression showed a significant negative correlation between force required for fracture and age, weight and height of the subject, anteroposterior length and angle. The younger the individual, the slighter their build, the longer the bone and the smaller the angle, the greater the force required to fracture the hyoid bone.

This paper describes two fatalities, three non-fatal intentional and three accidental oral ingestions of yew (Taxus baccata) leaves. In all cases the post-mortem external examinations showed no signs of violence. Internal examinations revealed small green, needle-like particles on the tongue, in the esophagus and in the stomach. ⋯ In urine, highest 3,5-DMP concentration was 7500 μg/L and 23,000 μg/L after enzymatic hydrolysis, respectively. In intentional and accidental poisonings, when electrocardiogram (ECG) examinations revealed ventricular tachycardia and/or prolonged QRS intervals, taxines were identified in plasma/serum, even after the ingestion of a few number of yew leaves, when 3,5-dimethoxyphenol was not even found. According to the data from one near-fatal intentional poisoning, elimination half-life of MAT, TAXIN B, MHDAT and MHTAT in serum was calculated with 11-13 h and taxines were detected up to t=+122 h post-ingestion of approximately two handfuls of yew leaves.

This publication reports analytical properties of a new hallucinogenic substance identified in blotter papers seized from the drug market, namely 25C-NBOMe [2-(4-chloro-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-N-(2-methoxybenzyl)ethanamine]. The identification was based on results of comprehensive study including several analytical methods, i.e., GC-EI-MS (without derivatization and after derivatization with TFAA), LC-ESI-QTOF-MS, FTIR and NMR. The GC-MS spectrum of 25C-NBOMe was similar to those obtained for other representatives of the 25-NBOMe series, with dominant ions observed at m/z=150, 121 and 91. ⋯ The MS/MS experiments confirmed that the investigated substance was N-(2-methoxy)benzyl derivative of 2C-C. The substance was also characterized by FTIR spectroscopy to corroborate its identity. Final elucidation of the structure was performed by NMR spectroscopy.

Determination of glyphosate and AMPA in blood and urine from humans: about 13 cases of acute intoxication.
Acute intoxications after ingesting glyphosate are observed in suicidal or accidental cases. Despite low potential toxicity of this herbicide, a number of fatalities and severe outcomes are reported. Indeed, some authors have described the clinical features associated with blood and urine concentrations following intoxication. ⋯ In the severe intoxication case for which blood has been sampled, the blood glyphosate concentration was found at 838 mg/L. Death was most of the time associated with larger taken dose (500 mL in one patient) and high blood glyphosate concentrations. To predict clinical outcomes and to guide treatment support in patients who ingested glyphosate, blood concentrations of this compound and the taken dose have been useful.
