Sanguis draxonis (SD) is a kind of red resin obtained from the wood of Dracaena cochinchinensis (Lour.) S. C. Chen (Dracaena cochinchinensis). It is a Chinese traditional herb that is prescribed for the handling of diabetic disorders, which is also supported by an array of scientific studies published in recent years. Although chemical constituents of this plant material have also been previously evaluated (Tang et al., 1995; Wei et al., 1998), it still remains poorly understood which constituent is the major contributor to its antidiabetic activities. Moreover, very little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying antidiabetic activities of SD. Flavonoids exist at a high level in SD. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antidiabetic effects of total flavonoids from SD (SDF) in type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats. ⋯ This study demonstrates both hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of SDF in T2DM rats, suggesting that flavonoids are the major active ingredients accounting for the antidiabetic activity of SD. Alleviating chronic inflammation responses and protecting pancreatic islets are possible mechanisms involved in the antidiabetic activity of SDF.

The infusion or decoction of Mirabilis jalapa leaves is used in traditional medicine in Brazil to treat inflammatory and painful diseases. Thus, the present study was designed to investigate whether the leaf ethyl acetate (Eta) fraction from Mirabilis jalapa exhibits antinociceptive effect in clinically relevant pain models in mice. Furthermore, we have investigated the role of cholinergic system in the antinociceptive action produced by Eta in mice. ⋯ Based on its use in traditional medicine, the results of the present study confirmed the antinociceptive properties of Eta in clinically relevant pain models. Also its effect on the CFA-induced chronic inflammation seems to be related to acetylcholinesterase inhibition and cholinergic system.

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), leading to dire consequences, is a serious and fatal disease in clinic. Danhong injection (DHI), one of the most popular medications for coronary heart disease and cerebral ischemia, plays pharmacological actions through inhibiting local inflammation. Nevertheless, the anti-inflammatory effect of DHI has not been reported before and has not been fully clarified. ⋯ These results demonstrate that DHI exerts the protective effect through inhibiting the expressions of iNOS, COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6, MCP-1 and TNF-α, which elucidate that DHI may be a strongly multi-target Chinese medicine injection on improving the inflammatory diseases.

Rhizoma coptidis (RC) has been used as a remedy for inflammation-related diseases in traditional medicine. Although it is known to have anti-inflammatory activities, its mechanism of action on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation has not yet been identified in detail. ⋯ The results presented here clearly demonstrate that RC could significantly protect mice against LPS-induced acute liver injury.

Wen Luo Yin (WLY) is a traditional Chinese formula, which has the traditional use of scattering cold pathogen, draining dampness, freeing the flow of network vessels and relieving pains. It is extensively used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients for more than 2000 years, but its actions on angiogenesis of RA have not been clarified. The present study aims to determine the anti-angiogenic activity of WLY on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model and in human fibroblast-like synoviocytes of RA (HFLS-RA) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). ⋯ Our data suggest for the first time that WLY posses the anti-angiogenic effect in RA both in vivo and in vitro by downregulating angiogenic activators.
