Fuzi (lateral root of Aconitum carmichaeli) is a popular traditional Chinese medicine well known for its both therapeutic and high-toxic activities. Its toxic alkaloid ingredients, mainly aconitine, mesaconitine, and hypaconitine, are responsible for the high toxicity. However, to date, no detoxication strategy is available to completely eliminate Fuzi's toxicity, and, whether Fuzi's efficacy could be kept after detoxication, remain unknown and debatable. ⋯ A complete-detoxication strategy has been developed successfully for ensuring the safe and effective use of Fuzi. The detoxication mechanism associated with elimination of toxic alkaloids has kept Fuzi's efficacy, indicating a non-interdependent relationship between its efficacy and toxicity. This is the first report on such an optimal detoxication strategy and on the application of detoxicated Fuzi in AA. It may provide in depth understanding to the toxicological and pharmacological profiles of Fuzi and further benefit the herbal drug development with safety and efficacy for disease especially RA therapy.

Vernonia guineensis Benth. (Asteraceae) preparations are used in folk medicine in Cameroon to treat a number of ailments, including prostate cancer and malaria, and is used as an anthelmintic, adaptogen and antidote. The aim of this study was to continue the validation of the activity of Vernonia guineensis Benth. extracts and isolated molecules against cancer cell lines following the previous isolation of an anti-prostate cancer sugar ester from the root extract. ⋯ The cytotoxicity demonstrated by the crude extract and isolated sesquiterpenes against cancer cell lines highlights the medicinal potential of V. guineensis. The selective anti-proliferation and dose dependent anticlonogenic activities suggest that the identified sesquiterpenes could be potential antitumor agents.

Tripterygium wilfordii Hook f. is one of Traditional Chinese Medicines which is commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The total alkaloids were the main constituent part of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook f. It has a great significance to study the effects of the total alkaloids of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook f. (ATW) on RA. ⋯ ATW not only could inhibit the symptom of CIA rats significantly but also could inhibit the production of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α in serum and the expression of IL-6, IL-8, NF-κB and TNF-α in synovial tissue targeting the inflammatory. ATW would be a drug as a novel botanical drug for the treatment of RA.

Artemisia capillaris Thunberg (Compositae) have been used as traditional medicine as a diuretic, liver protective agent, and for amelioration of inflammatory and analgesic disorders. The present study was carried out to establish the scientific rationale for treating inflammation and to find active principles from A. capillaris. The aim of the present study is to investigate the possible anti-inflammatory mechanism of the major component (capillarisin) isolated from A. capillaris via inhibition of MyD88/TIRAP inflammatory signaling both in vitro and in vivo models. ⋯ The results presented here demonstrate that capillarisin has consistent anti-inflammatory properties and acts by inhibiting inflammatory mediators in in vitro and in vivo experimental models, and suggest its potential utility in the control of inflammatory disorders.

Investigation of medicinal plant extracts traditionally used against uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) and identification of antiadhesive effects under in vitro conditions against binding of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) on bladder cell surface. ⋯ Different plant extracts, traditionally used for UTI, exhibit antiadhesive effects against UPEC under in vitro conditions. Molecular targets can be different, either on the bacterial or on the host cell surface. Combination of these medicinal plants with different targets, as observed often in phytotherapy, results in synergistic effects.
