The influence of the metabolic syndrome on atrial fibrillation occurrence and outcome after coronary bypass surgery: a 3-year follow-up study.
We sought to investigate the influence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) on new-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF), and occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in a period of 3 years after isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. ⋯ The MS and its criteria significantly increased risk of POAF and MACCE in a 3-year period. The MS, irrespective of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, was associated with POAF and MACCE in the patients who underwent CABG.

Randomized Controlled TrialOmega-3 polyunsaturated Fatty acids reduce the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients with history of prior myocardial infarction undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting.
The impact of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for prevention of atrial fibrillation (AF) is still part of a lively debate. The present study evaluates the impact of orally administered omega-3 ethyl ester concentrate (omega-3 PUFA) on postoperative onset of AF in patients with recent myocardial infarction (≤ 3 months) undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Patients and ⋯ Preoperative administration of 2 g omega-3 PUFA reduces incidence of postoperative AF in patients with recent (≤ 3 months) myocardial infarction undergoing isolated CABG.

Extent of removal for mediastinal nodal stations for patients with clinical stage I non-small cell lung cancer: effect on outcome.
Lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection comprise the standard surgical treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Although complete mediastinal lymph node dissection has been recommended as part of the procedure for achieving complete resection, the benefits for early lung cancer are unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different degrees of mediastinal lymph node dissection on the clinical outcomes of patients with clinical stage I NSCLC. ⋯ The extent of dissection of mediastinal lymph nodes affected the clinical outcomes of our study patients with clinical stage I NSCLC. At least evaluation of lobe-specific lymph node dissection is required.

The influence of body mass index and weight loss on outcome of elderly patients undergoing lung cancer resection.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of nutritional status on outcome of elderly patients resected for lung cancer. ⋯ In elderly patients, malnutrition was a significant additional risk factor for early death. Nutritional assessment should be included in the routine preoperative selection. In malnourished patients, nutritional support before and after operation and a careful postdischarge care might be beneficial, but it should be corroborated by further prospective studies.
