To provide a review of the evidence-based treatments for obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSD), a group of conditions related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) by phenomenological and etiological similarities, the morbidity of which is increasingly recognized. ⋯ As in OCD, several conditions in the proposed OCSD benefit from SRIs and (or) cognitive-behavioural interventions. However, the treatment literature is generally limited, and more randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to evaluate individual and combination treatments, for short-term use and as maintenance.

To determine whether exposure to particular types of traumatic events was differentially associated with suicide attempts in a representative sample of active military personnel. ⋯ The current study is the first to demonstrate that sexual and other interpersonal traumatic events are associated with suicide attempts in a representative sample of active Canadian military men and women.

To examine the prevalence and profile of people with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders in relation to numerous demographic, diagnostic, and needs-related variables across a comprehensive system of mental health services using a standard methodology. ⋯ The prevalence estimate of co-occurring disorders is likely representative of a multilevel system of care that serves a large, mixed urban and rural population. Results highlight the need to focus on specific subpopulations and sectors in pursuit of more integrated treatment and support for their mental health and addictions problems.

The need for psychiatrists to work with patients and families living with chronic life-threatening illnesses has never been greater. Further, psychiatrists may find exciting work within the relatively new field of palliative care, which is devoted to the prevention and relief of all suffering. ⋯ This need presents limitless opportunities for psychiatrists to care for patients, provide education, and engage in research. The potential to make a difference is great.
