To investigate the clinical and pharmacoepidemiological determinants of delirium in a psychiatric inpatient population. ⋯ These findings indicate that using conservative dosages of antipsychotic medications and minimizing the use of anticholinergic medications for parkinsonian symptoms may help to prevent delirium in psychiatric inpatients. Anticonvulsant mood stabilizers may convey less delirium risk than lithium. Antidepressant medications and sedative-hypnotics were not important determinants of delirium in this population.

To evaluate the characteristics of patients with various substance-related disorders, and to examine rates of retention in treatment. ⋯ Opiate-addicted clients had the worst prognosis and treatment profiles. Further research is needed to identify factors that would optimize treatment for opiate dependence.

Canadian psychiatry across 5 decades: from clinical inference to evidence-based practice.
To examine the evolution of the epistemological basis of Canadian psychiatry over the last 50 years. ⋯ Epistemological changes in psychiatry are a positive development. The future should bring an even stronger neuroscience base as well as an evidence-based approach to psychotherapy.

The literature implies that negative attributional style is a psychological correlate of depression. Recent evidence suggests that negative attributional style may be specific to depression. This study examines the association between level of depression and negative attributional style in a sample of individuals with schizophrenia. ⋯ These results are consistent with the idea that negative attributional style may be specific to depression and not a general characteristic of psychopathology.
