Comparative StudyEarly palliative intervention for patients with advanced cancer.
Early palliative intervention in advanced cancer patients with metastatic non-small-cell-lung cancer has been shown to improve survival time. Possibly, palliative intervention at the time of outpatient care further improves patient survival time. ⋯ The results of this study suggested that early outpatient referral and palliative intervention leads to improvement of the outcome in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer and colorectal cancer. A prospective comparative study is warranted.

A clinical study of transoral pharyngectomies to treat superficial hypopharyngeal cancers.
For years, it has been a major interest for surgeons and oncologists to develop a novel technique to detect hypopharyngeal cancers at an early stage and to treat the lesions in a less invasive manner. The advent of the narrow band imaging system combined endoscopy and various endoscopic approaches shed light on the new era of the minimum invasive management of superficial cancers in hypopharyngeal regions. ⋯ Endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection and endoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery-transoral pharyngectomies are useful procedures for treating superficial hypopharyngeal cancers. Endoscopic mucosal resection manifested the least invasiveness and may be beneficial for resecting small superficial lesions, endoscopic submucosal dissection may be advantageous for patients with difficult laryngopharyngeal exposure and endoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery has shown the optimal effectiveness and minimal complications and can be applied to most of the hypopharyngeal sub-sites. All three procedures require a high level of technical skill and close collaboration between otolaryngologists and gastroenterologists.

Salvage chemotherapy with docetaxel, ifosfamide and nedaplatin (DIN) for patients with advanced germ cell tumors: a preliminary report.
We investigated the efficacy and toxicity of a docetaxel, ifosfamide and nedaplatin regimen as salvage therapy for patients with advanced testicular germ cell tumor. ⋯ The docetaxel, ifosfamide and nedaplatin regimen was efficacious and well-tolerated as salvage chemotherapy for patients with advanced germ cell tumor.

Clinical outcome and patterns of recurrence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma with a limited field of postoperative radiotherapy.
Postoperative radiotherapy is the standard treatment for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma having high-risk features in surgical specimens. However, its severe toxicity can be a significant problem. This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of our limited-field postoperative radiotherapy with the aim of reducing morbidity by minimizing the radiation field. ⋯ Although the toxicities associated with limited-field postoperative radiotherapy could be kept to lower levels, the locoregional control rate did not seem to be sufficient. We should arrange the radiation field depending on risk factors.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEfficacy and safety of axitinib versus sorafenib in metastatic renal cell carcinoma: subgroup analysis of Japanese patients from the global randomized Phase 3 AXIS trial.
Axitinib is a potent and selective second-generation inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptors 1, 2 and 3. The efficacy and safety of axitinib in Japanese patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma were evaluated. ⋯ Axitinib is efficacious and well tolerated in Japanese patients with previously treated metastatic renal cell carcinoma, consistent with the results in the overall population, providing a new targeted therapy for these Japanese patients.
