Multicenter StudyPhase II trial of erlotinib for Japanese patients with previously treated non-small-cell lung cancer harboring EGFR mutations: results of Lung Oncology Group in Kyushu (LOGiK0803).
Erlotinib has been reported to be useful for treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer harboring mutation of the epidermal growth factor receptor gene EGFR-mt. However, no prospective trial has yet assessed the utility of erlotinib in Japanese patients. ⋯ This prospective study is the first to have investigated the usefulness of erlotinib in Japanese patients with previously treated EGFR-mt non-small-cell lung cancer. Although this trial could not meet the primary endpoint, erlotinib was well tolerated and showed clinical benefit such as promising disease control rate or progression-free survival in this population, similar to gefitinib.

ReviewDrug review: Safety and efficacy of bevacizumab for glioblastoma and other brain tumors.
Glioblastoma is a highly vascular tumor that expresses vascular endothelial growth factor, a key regulator of angiogenesis and tumor blood vessel permeability. Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor and the growth of gliomas. Bevacizumab monotherapy has proven effective for recurrent glioblastoma, and it extended progression-free survival and improved patient quality of life in various clinical trials. ⋯ However, these events are also associated with glioma itself, and careful attention needs to be paid to these events. Bevacizumab is used to treat various diseases including radiation necrosis and recurrent brain tumors such as brain metastases, schwannoma and meningioma, but additional clinical trials are necessary. The efficacy and current problems associated with bevacizumab in the treatment of glioblastoma and other brain tumors are reviewed.

Clinical TrialA retrospective study of chemotherapy with cisplatin plus gemcitabine after the failure of gemcitabine monotherapy for biliary tract cancer.
Before the ABC-02 trial, because there was no standard chemotherapy for patients with advanced biliary tract cancer, we treated them with gemcitabine alone. However, recently cisplatin plus gemcitabine became the standard first-line chemotherapy. We assessed the benefits of gemcitabine plus cisplatin chemotherapy after failed gemcitabine monotherapy. ⋯ Cisplatin plus gemcitabine could be an optional therapy for unresectable or recurrent biliary tract cancer after failed gemcitabine monotherapy.

Case ReportsExperience of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy for a BRCA1 mutation carrier and establishment of a system performing a preventive surgery for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome in Japan: our challenges for the future.
Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy is currently regarded as the most certain primary method for preventing ovarian cancer among BRCA1/2 mutation carriers with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. However, risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy has rarely been performed in Japan. ⋯ Recent treatment guidelines for breast cancer in Japan recommended risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy should be performed in the framework of the standard therapeutic modality for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers in the near future.

Low-risk prostate cancer patients without visible tumor (T1c) on multiparametric MRI could qualify for active surveillance candidate even if they did not meet inclusion criteria of active surveillance protocol.
We compared the pathologic outcomes of prostate cancer patients who did not qualify for active surveillance according to the tumor visibility on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging. ⋯ The tumor visibility on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging could be a predictor of favorable disease for the prostate cancer patients who did not meet active surveillance criteria. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging could help to determine treatment modality for the low-risk prostate cancer patients who consider active surveillance even if they did not meet active surveillance criteria.
