Predictors of early vs. late permanent shunt insertion after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Numerous studies have identified different predictors for secondary hydrocephalus after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), although predictors regarding timing of the shunt operation have never been reported. Predictors for an early shunt, which was defined as a shunt operation performed ≤30 days after SAH onset, and for a late shunt, performed at >40 days, were investigated. ⋯ The difference in the predictors between the early and late shunts implied that the mechanisms of secondary hydrocephalus differed between the early and late shunt groups. Knowledge of the associated risk factors might help to predict the timing of the shunt operation for early rehabilitation planning in the future.

Application of flow cytometry for evaluating clinical prognosis and histopathological grade of human glioma.
Flow cytometry was applied to predict the biological parameters of tumor behavior based on the DNA content distribution of tumors. We used flow cytometry to determine the number of cell cycles for the characterization of intracranial gliomas and its possible prognostic role. ⋯ Our results indicate that flow cytometry analysis for G2/M-phase and S+G2/M-phase fractions can be used for tumor grading for rapidly differentiating low- from high-grade gliomas.

Local cerebral hypothermia induced by selective infusion of cold lactated ringer's: a feasibility study in rhesus monkeys.
Hypothermia has shown promise as a neuroprotective strategy for stroke. The use of whole body hypothermia has limited clinical utility due to many severe side effects. Selective brain cooling, or local brain hypothermia, has been previously proposed as an alternative treatment strategy. This study investigated the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of selective brain hypothermia induced by local infusion of ice-cold lactated Ringer's solution in rhesus monkeys. ⋯ Local infusion of ice-cold lactated Ringer's solution via micro-catheter is a safe and effective method for selective cerebral hypothermia. This cooling method could potentially be developed as a new treatment in acute ischemic stroke.

Internal maxillary artery to intracranial artery bypass: a case series of 31 patients with chronic internal carotid/middle cerebral arterial-sclerotic steno-occlusive disease.
To evaluate the effectiveness of internal maxillary artery (IMA) - radial artery graft (RAG) - middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass surgery for chronic arterial-sclerotic severe stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) or MCA. ⋯ By supplying an adequate flow to a larger flow territory of chronically stenotic/occlusive major cerebral arteries, IMA bypass surgery is efficient for restoring hemodynamics in selected patients and improving their neurological deficits.

Multicenter StudyEndovascular treatment of intracraneal aneurysm with pipeline embolization device: experience in four centres in Barcelona.
Flow diverters represent a useful tool in the treatment of fusiform aneurysms and wide-neck saccular aneurysms which until the advent of this technology were problematic to treat. Pipeline™ Embolization Device (PED) has been described in several series showing high rates of occlusion and being relatively safe. ⋯ Treatment by PED of fusiform or wide-neck saccular aneurysms is associated with high rates of occlusion after six and 12 months. Correct selection of the patients, aneurysms and also specific characteristics of the Pipeline device should be known in order to select the best therapeutic option. Our findings suggest that the indication must be judged case by case in the selection of suitable patients for PED therapy.
