Excessive release of endogenous neuropeptide Y into cerebrospinal fluid after treatment of spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage and its possible impact on self-reported neuropsychological performance - results of a prospective clinical pilot study on good-grade patients.
Neuropsychological dysfunction after treatment of spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage (sSAH) is common but underreported. The vasoconstrictor neuropeptide Y (NPY) is excessively released after sSAH and in psychiatric disorders. We prospectively analysed the treatment-specific differences in the secretion of endogenous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) NPY during the acute stage after sSAH and its impact on cognitive processing. ⋯ ANOVA: analysis of variance; aSAH: aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage; AUC: area under the curve; CBF: cerebral blood flow; CSF: cerebrospinal fluid; CT (scan): computed tomography (scan); CV: cerebral vasospasm; DIND: delayed ischemic neurological deficit; DSA: digital subtraction angiography; EIA: enzyme immunoassay; EV: endovascular aneurysm occlusion; EVD: external ventricular drainage; FU: 6-month follow-up; GCS: Glasgow Coma Scale; Ghp: general health perceptions; GOS: Glasgow Outcome Scale; h: hour/s; HH: Hunt and Hess; ICU: intensive care unit; ISR: ICD-10-Symptom-Rating questionnaire; MCS: mental component summary; Mhi: general mental health; min: minute/s; min-max: minimum - maximum; ml: millilitre; mRS: modified Ranking Scale; MS: microsurgical clipping, microsurgical aneurysm occlusion; ng: nanograms; no. Randomized Controlled TrialPercutaneous mastoid electrical stimulator alleviates autonomic dysfunction in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
Poststroke prognosis is associated with autonomic status. The purpose of our study was to determine whether percutaneous mastoid electrical stimulator (PMES) can alleviate abnormal heart rate variability (HRV) and improve clinical outcome. ⋯ PMES was a safe, effective, and low-cost therapy to alleviate HRV and could significantly reduce mortality in the early recovery phase after acute ischemic stroke.

Heart rate variability after endovascular coiling is associated with short-term outcomes in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage.
to evaluate whether postoperative heart rate variability (HRV) predicts short-term outcomes in patients undergoing coil embolization of ruptured aneurysms. ⋯ Higher HRV in the first day after coil embolization was associated with unfavorable outcomes in patients with SAH. Early detection and appropriate treatment of the overactive sympathetic activity might promote functional recovery after SAH. Abbreviation: BP: Blood pressure; CI: Confidence interval; DBP: Diastolic blood pressure; GCS: Glasgow coma scale; GOS: Glasgow outcome scale; HR: Heart rate; HRV: Heart rate variability; OR: Odds ratio; ROC: Receiver operating characteristics; SD: Standard deviation; SAH: Subarachnoid hemorrhage; SV: Successive variation; SBP: Systolic blood pressure.

Sonographic assessment of optic nerve and ophthalmic vessels in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
Early diagnosis and proper monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) could reduce morbidity. ⋯ Reflected ICP changes on ONSD and papilla, measured by TOS, could be a valuable noninvasive additional tool to diagnose and monitor IIH patients. IIH insignificantly influences ophthalmic vessels hemodynamics. Abbreviation BMI: Body mass index. CSF: Cerebrospinal fluid. EDV: End diastolic velocity. ICP: Intracranial pressure. IH:intracranial hypertension. IIH: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension. LP: Lumbar puncture. MI: Mechanical index. MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging. MRV: Magnetic resonance venography. OA: Ophthalmic artery OND: Optic nerve diameter. ONSD: Optic nerve sheath diameter. OV: Ophthalmic vein. PIs: Pulsatility indices. PSV: Peak systolic velocity. ROC: Receiver operator characteristic. TOS: Trans-orbital sonography.

Shear wave elastography of the brachial plexus roots at the interscalene groove.
Sonoelastography is an emerging technology that has been used to evaluate the musculoskeletal system including the brachial plexus of peripheral nerves, which has been only recently considered for study by shear wave elastography. The purpose of this study is to establish the normal sonoelastographic features of the C5-C7 nerve roots of the brachial plexus. ⋯ BMI: body mass index; SWE: shear wave elastography.
