Case ReportsDoppler ultrasound measurement of blood flow volume in the extracranial internal carotid artery for evaluation of brain perfusion after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Monitoring of cerebral blood flow (CBF) is an essential part in the early diagnosis of cerebral vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Several methods have been established to monitor cerebral perfusion in these patients. During last few years, a new sonographic approach has been introduced, the so called 'angle independent ultrasound system' for monitoring volume flow in the internal carotid artery (ICA). ⋯ In contrast to the TCD, we found a strong significant correlation of blood flow volume with Quantix ND in the ICA and the occurrence of cerebral infarction (p<0.001). These preliminary data justify further investigation of this angle independent Doppler ultrasound device. We postulate that this new tool might be effective for monitoring the CBF in the critical post-operative/post-interventional interval following aneurysmal SAH.

Although traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has been influenced by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it has developed distinctive features. Around the tenth century, Chinese medical books were introduced to Korea. In those days, Koreans started movement to develop its own medical system. ⋯ Through historical development, TKM has established the unique characteristic and modality as the whole-person-centered medicine.

Prior CSF shunting increases the risk of endoscopic third ventriculostomy failure in the treatment of obstructive hydrocephalus in adults.
Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is accepted as an effective treatment for obstructive hydrocephalus (OHC); however, its benefit in patients previously treated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting remains unclear. The value of concurrent ETV and ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting in patients with frequent shunt failure remains unstudied. ⋯ In our experience with ETV for OHC, prior CSF shunting in patients with obstructive hydrocephalus was associated with the decreased time to treatment failure following conversion to ETV. ETV may be less effective for the treatment of OHC in previously shunted patients. ETV combined with concurrent CSF shunting may be an important strategy to prevent catastrophic treatment failure in OHC patients with a history of multiple shunt revisions and complications.

Hemodynamic cerebral ischemia during carotid endarterectomy evaluated by intraoperative monitoring and post-operative diffusion-weighted imaging.
We used the result of monitoring to evaluate patients with post-operative neurological deficits attributable to hemodynamic cerebral ischemia owing to cross-clamping of the carotid artery. ⋯ Hemodynamic ischemia owing to cross-clamping of the ICA is rare in patients treated by CEA. However, in patients manifesting neurological deficits upon awakening from CEA, DWI and MRA should be performed immediately to facilitate their prompt treatment.

Localization of bone marrow stromal cells in injured spinal cord treated by intravenous route depends on the hemorrhagic lesions in traumatized spinal tissues.
Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) have been reported to improve movement deficit in adult rats with spinal cord injury (SCI). The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of BMSCs in the spinal cord lesion of the contusion model of SCI. ⋯ The migration of BMSCs in the injured region depends on the amount of the hemorrhage and damage to blood vessels of the spinal cord.
