Effect of Polyester and Plaster of Paris Casts on Determination of Volumetric Bone Mineral Density Assessed by Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT).
Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is a non-invasive, low-radiation tool for measuring volumetric bone mineral density. It has potential for use in fracture healing applications; however, the unknown attenuation effects of cast material on peripheral quantitative computed tomography have contributed to its limited use in this area. The effect of two common cast materials, polyester and Plaster of Paris was investigated by performing both in vitro and in vivo studies. ⋯ Cortical bone mineral density was decreased by 3.46 and 5.54 % for polyester and Plaster of Paris, respectively. This study quantified the effects of orthopaedic casts on pQCT-derived bone parameters. The results suggest applicability of commonly utilised cast materials in combination with pQCT to assess fracture healing.

The Effect of Vibration Treatments Combined with Teriparatide or Strontium Ranelate on Bone Healing and Muscle in Ovariectomized Rats.
The aim of the present study was to study the effect of combined therapy of teriparatide (PTH) or strontium ranelate (SR) with whole-body vibration (WBV) on bone healing and muscle properties in an osteopenic rat model. Seventy-two rats (3 months old) were bilaterally ovariectomized (Ovx), and 12 rats were left intact (Non-Ovx). After 8 weeks, bilateral transverse osteotomy was performed at the tibia metaphysis in all rats. ⋯ In muscles, combined therapies improved the fiber size of Ovx rats. WBV could be applied alone or in combination with anti-osteoporosis drug therapy to improve muscle tissue. However, in patients with fractures, anti-osteoporosis treatments and the application of vibration could have an adverse effect on bone healing.

Low-trauma fractures of elderly persons are a major public health problem. However, epidemiologic knowledge on their fresh secular trends is scarce. Trends in the number and incidence (per 100,000 persons) of low-trauma fractures of the pelvic ring among older Finns were assessed by taking into account individuals 80-year-old or older who were admitted to Finnish hospitals for primary treatment of such injury in 1970-2013. ⋯ If the fracture incidence continues to rise at the same rates as in 1970-2013 and the size of the 80-year-old or older population of Finland increases as predicted (87 % by the year 2030), the number low-trauma pelvic fractures in this population will be 2.4 times higher in the year 2030 (2550 fractures) than it was in 2013 (1055 fractures). The number of low-trauma fractures of the pelvis among Finns 80 years of age or older has risen sharply between 1970 and 2013-with a rate that cannot be explained merely by demographic changes. Further studies are urgently needed to better assess the reasons for the rise and possibilities for fracture prevention.

To reduce the burden of fracture, not only does bone fragility need to be addressed, but also injury prevention. Thus, fracture epidemiology irrespective of degree of trauma is informative. We aimed to determine age-and-sex-specific fracture incidence rates for the Barwon Statistical Division, Australia, 2006-2007. ⋯ For ankle fractures, there was an increase during childhood and adolescence but this extended into early adult life; in contrast to females, there were no further age-related increases. An adolescent-young adult peak incidence was observed for fractures of the face, clavicle, carpal bones, hand, fingers, foot and toe, without further age-related increases. Examining patterns of fracture provides the evidence base for monitoring temporal changes in fracture burden, and for identifying high-incidence groups to which fracture prevention strategies could be directed.

Humeral Fractures in South-Eastern Australia: Epidemiology and Risk Factors.
In this study, we report the epidemiology and risk factors for humeral fractures (proximal humerus and shaft) among men and women residing in south-eastern Australia. Incident fractures during 2006 and 2007 were identified using X-ray reports (Geelong Osteoporosis Study Fracture Grid). Risk factors were identified using data from case-control studies conducted as part of the Geelong Osteoporosis Study. ⋯ For post-menopausal women, risk factors associated with proximal humerus fractures included a lower non-milk dairy consumption and sustaining a prior fracture. Humeral shaft fractures in both sexes were sustained mainly in childhood, while proximal humerus fractures were sustained in older adulthood. The overall age-standardised rates of proximal humerus fractures were nearly twice as high in females compared to males, whereas the incidence rates of humeral shaft fractures were similar.
