Effects of depression and anxiety on quality of life in five common neurological disorders.
It is unclear whether anxiety and depression impact health-related quality of life (HRQoL) equally across neurological diseases. This study examines the association between anxiety or depression and HRQoL in select neurological disorders. ⋯ Anxiety and depression have varying impacts on HRQoL across neurological diseases. It is important for clinicians to be aware of how these patterns differ in each condition.

Comparative StudyPatterns and correlates of medical cannabis use for pain among patients prescribed long-term opioid therapy.
Little is known about co-occurring long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) and medical cannabis use. We compared characteristics of patients prescribed LTOT who endorsed using medical cannabis for pain to patients who did not report cannabis use. ⋯ There are potential risks associated with co-occurring LTOT and medical cannabis for pain. Study findings highlight the need for further clinical evaluation in this population. Future research is needed to examine the longitudinal impact of medical cannabis use on pain-related and substance use outcomes.

Review Meta AnalysisExercise effects on depression: Possible neural mechanisms.
Depression is a syndrome of stress- and emotion-dysregulation, involving compromised structural integrity of frontal-limbic networks. Meta-analytic evidence indicates that volumetric reductions in the hippocampus, anterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, striatum, and amygdala, as well as compromised white matter integrity are frequently observed in depressed adults. ⋯ The prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, hippocampus, and corpus callosum emerged as structural neural markers that may serve as targets for exercise-based treatments for depression. These findings highlight the need for randomized exercise interventions to test these proposed neurobiological mechanisms of exercise on depression.

Misuse of prescription opioids among chronic pain patients suffering from anxiety: A cross-sectional analysis.
In the past two decades, chronic pain has been increasingly treated with prescription opioids, particularly in developed countries. This has drawn public concern of possible risks associated with the potential misuse of prescriptions opioids. Previous research has indicated that this may be particularly true among individuals suffering from co-occurring psychiatric disorders. The present study sought to explore rates of misuse among chronic pain patients prescribed opioids, comparing individuals with and without anxiety. ⋯ These findings highlight the importance of detecting and addressing co-occurring anxiety when treating patients with chronic pain who receive prescription opioids.
