International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are a diverse group of doctors who provide essential health services in many western countries, and hospitals are increasingly relying upon IMGs to fill vacancies in all staff grades. Clinical skills and experience vary greatly between doctors, and orientation and clinical skills training is a way of addressing any identified deficiencies. ⋯ A 'hub and spoke' model is a useful model to adopt: a central coordinating office designs and implements programs informed by best available evidence, and clinical educators on site at healthcare facilities implement programs and provide direct assistance and orientation. Broad-based programs attending to orientation, doctor's families' needs, communication skills and clinical skills training are required. Support from health administrators is essential.

The Final Professional Examination for medical students at Leicester Medical School involves the use of real patients, and senior clinicians assess students over a series of consultations with these patients. What the patients themselves think of the students is not known. ⋯ Based on the results of this study, educational recommendations are made which might improve student performance in the examination and lead to greater patient satisfaction with the 'end product' of the medical school, namely the graduating student. These include the incorporation of students' observation of infection control measures within the assessment schedule, and more direct preparation of students in handling uncertainty and their anxieties within the consultation.

The one-minute preceptor (OMP) model was developed to effectively and efficiently teach learners while simultaneously addressing patient needs. This study was conducted to determine if third- and fourth-year medical students prefer the OMP model over the traditional precepting model and what teaching points they needed from the clinical encounters. ⋯ Students rate the OMP as a more effective model of teaching than the traditional model. The teaching points desired by students change as the case presentation/discussion unfolds. Work carried out at: University of California, San Francisco, Office of Medical Education and University of California, Irvine, Department of Family Medicine.

Due to inadequate preparation, many medical professionals are unable to critically evaluate published research articles or properly design, execute and present their own research. ⋯ Our experience shows it is feasible to accomplish these objectives, with a high level of satisfaction, through a didactic program targeted to the general academic community.
