Surgical trauma induces iron accumulation and oxidative stress in a rodent model of postoperative cognitive dysfunction.
Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is recognized as a complication after surgery in the elderly. The exact pathogenic mechanisms of POCD are still unknown. In this study, we investigated the role of iron accumulation within the central nervous system in the development of cognitive dysfunction in rats following splenectomy. ⋯ The alterations in iron homeostasis were accompanied by intensified oxidative stress as measured by increases in the lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde, and a decrease in the levels of superoxide dismutase activity. Overall, these findings suggest that the impaired cognitive function was primarily due to surgical trauma rather than anesthesia. Increased iron accumulation and oxidative stress in the brain, especially in the hippocampus, may be involved in the pathogenesis of POCD.

Effect of dietary Garcinia cambogia extract on serum essential minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium) and trace elements (iron, copper, zinc) in rats fed with high-lipid diet.
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Garcinia cambogia extract on serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations in rats fed with the normal or the high-lipid and -cholesterol diet. Thirty 1-year-old female Sprague-Dawley rats (pathogen-free), weighing an average of 229 g, were randomly assigned to three experimental groups of ten animals each. Diets and tap water were given ad libitum for 75 days. ⋯ In conclusion, a diet containing the high fat amounts may lead to the increase in circular levels of some minerals due to the short-chain fatty acid production lowering the luminal pH which increases mineral solubility, or serving as a fuel for mucosal cells and stimulating cell proliferation in the large intestine. G. cambogia extract may be used in the P and Cu deficiencies due to increases resulting in the present P and Cu amounts in G. cambogia extract, or the use of phytate P in diet. It was hoped that with further evidence-based study this product will enter to mainstream medicines.

Relation between zinc, copper, and magnesium concentrations following cardiopulmonary bypass and postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
Atrial fibrillation is the most frequently encountered arrhythmia following cardiac surgery. Since the essential trace elements zinc, copper, and magnesium are suspected to have an effect on postoperative atrial fibrillation, the concentrations of these elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry in the plasma of 60 patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting. Blood samples were collected every 30 min during cardiopulmonary bypass and postoperatively. ⋯ The zinc and copper concentrations at postoperative days 1 and 3 were significantly different (P < 0.05) between patients with and without atrial fibrillation. The concentrations of zinc following cardiopulmonary bypass recovered more slowly in patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation than in patients without it. Whether or not supplemental zinc could lower the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation should be evaluated in future prospective randomized clinical trials.

Suboptimal selenium supply--a continuing problem in Keshan disease areas in Heilongjiang province.
This study explores whether the declining prevalence of Keshan disease is associated with increasing selenium levels in Keshan disease areas in Heilongjiang province. Six counties endemic with Keshan disease and three non-endemic counties were selected as study areas. In each county, two townships and in each township one village were chosen in which to survey ten families about head hair, grain, and soil samples and to obtain demographic information. ⋯ More residents in Keshan disease areas preferred flour and corn. The detection rate for latent Keshan disease had a significantly negative correlation with the corn selenium level in six counties endemic with Keshan disease. As the population in this region is still at risk for Keshan disease, selenium surveillance measures should be intensified.

Continuous positive airway pressure therapy reduces oxidative stress markers and blood pressure in sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome patients.
Sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is characterized by recurrent episodes of hypoxia/reoxygenation, which seems to promote oxidative stress. SAHS patients experience increases in hypertension, obesity and insulin resistance (IR). The purpose was to evaluate in SAHS patients the effects of 1 month of treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on oxidative stress and the association between oxidative stress and insulin resistance and blood pressure (BP). ⋯ BP correlated with oxidative stress markers. In conclusion, we observed an obvious improvement in oxidative stress and found that it was accompanied by an evident decrease in BP with no modification in IR. Consequently, we believe that the decrease in oxidative stress after 1 month of CPAP treatment in these patients is not contributing much to IR genesis, though it could be related to the hypertension etiology.
