Multicenter Study Comparative StudyAssessment of the psychometric properties of the EQ-5D-3L and EQ-5D-5L instruments in psoriasis.
The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the five-level (EQ-5D-5L) in comparison with the standard three-level (EQ-5D-3L) classification systems of the EQ-5D in a sample of psoriatic patients. Psoriatic subjects (n = 396) recruited from 16 private practicing centers from various areas of Greece self-completed the two EQ-5D versions and the Dermatology Life Quality Index, while information was also collected on socio-demographics, clinical characteristics and comorbidities. The EQ-5D-5L and EQ-5D-3L were evaluated in terms of agreement, feasibility, ceiling effects, redistribution properties, inconsistency, informativity, and convergent and known-groups validity. ⋯ Both instruments demonstrated good convergent and known-groups validity, with evidence of a slightly better convergent performance and discriminatory efficiency of the EQ-5D-5L. In conclusion, both instruments demonstrated consistency, valid redistribution and good construct validity. The EQ-5D-5L system may be preferable to the EQ-5D-3L in psoriatic patients, as it demonstrated a marginally better performance in terms of reduced ceiling effects, increased informativity, and improved convergent and known-groups validity efficiency, particularly in the domain of "anxiety/depression".

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyClinical comparison between two hyaluronic acid-derived fillers in the treatment of nasolabial folds in Chinese subjects: BioHyalux versus Restylane.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are used to improve the appearance of nasolabial folds (NLF). This study aimed to compare the efficacy, safety, and durability of a new hyaluronic acid gel (BioHyalux) versus Restylane for the correction of NLF. This was a multicenter, double-blinded, randomized, controlled, non-inferiority clinical trial involving 88 subjects with moderate to severe NLF. ⋯ At 6 months, 100 % reported improvements on both side; at 13-15 months, 60 % of subjects reported improvements with BioHyalux versus 64 % with Restylane. Adverse events were transient and predominantly mild or moderate in severity including injection site swelling, pain, itching, bruising, and tenderness. BioHyalux had reliable safety and tolerance, and could be an effective injectable filler for correcting NLF.

The safety and efficacy of bacterial nanocellulose wound dressing incorporating sericin and polyhexamethylene biguanide: in vitro, in vivo and clinical studies.
In our previous work, we have attempted to develop a novel bacterial nanocellulose wound dressing which composed of both polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) as an antimicrobial agent and sericin as an accelerative wound healing component. The loading sequence and concentration of PHMB and sericin were optimized to provide the wound dressing with the most effective antimicrobial activity and enhanced collagen production. In this study, further in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies of this novel wound dressing were performed to evaluate its safety, efficacy, and applicability. ⋯ Then, the novel dressing was applied for the treatment of full-thickness wounds in rats. The wounds treated with our novel dressing showed significantly lower percentage of wound size and higher extent of collagen formation mainly due to the activity of sericin. We concluded that our novel bacterial nanocellulose incorporating PHMB and sericin was a safe and efficient wound dressing material for further investigation in the wound healing efficacy in clinic.

Meta AnalysisEthnicity-stratified analysis of the association between IL-18 polymorphisms and systemic lupus erythematosus in a European population: a meta-analysis.
We performed a meta-analysis to identify the association between polymorphisms in the promoter of interleukin-18 (IL-18) and susceptibility for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Genotype data for three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs rs360719, rs1946518, and rs187238) in the IL-18 promoter were extracted from 20 studies of three different ethnicities (European, Asian, and South American). Data from each ethnicity group and their combinations were analyzed. ⋯ We also examined genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from an Asian subpopulation (Chinese) for the association between rs1946518 and SLE, but found no association (P = 0.83). The third SNP, rs187238, was not significantly associated with SLE in any of the populations examined. In summary, this study identified a significant association between SLE and two SNPs within the IL-18 gene promoter region (rs360719 and rs1946518) in a European population, but not in populations of Asian origin.

Deodorants and antiperspirants affect the axillary bacterial community.
The use of underarm cosmetics is common practice in the Western society to obtain better body odor and/or to prevent excessive sweating. A survey indicated that 95 % of the young adult Belgians generally use an underarm deodorant or antiperspirant. The effect of deodorants and antiperspirants on the axillary bacterial community was examined on nine healthy subjects, who were restrained from using deodorant/antiperspirant for 1 month. ⋯ Especially when antiperspirants were applied, the microbiome showed an increase in diversity. Antiperspirant usage led toward an increase of Actinobacteria, which is an unfavorable situation with respect to body odor development. These initial results show that axillary cosmetics modify the microbial community and can stimulate odor-producing bacteria.
