Aquaporins (AQPs) constitute one family of transmembrane proteins facilitating transport of water across cell membranes. Due to their specificity, AQPs have a broad spectrum of physiological functions, and for keratinocytes there are indications that these channel proteins are involved in cell migration and proliferation with consequences for the antimicrobial defense of the skin. AQP3 and AQP10 are aqua-glyceroporins, known to transport glycerol as well as water. ⋯ Applying immunohistochemistry, cell-like structures in the shape of corneocytes were identified in all samples by AQP3 and AQP10 antibodies. In conclusion, identification of AQP3 and AQP10 protein in SC in an in vivo model is new. Together with the new "minimal-invasive" method for SC collection presented, this opens for new possibilities to study the role of AQPs in relation to function of the skin barrier.

Role of regulatory T cells in patients with acute herpes zoster and relationship to postherpetic neuralgia.
This study is to analyze distribution of peripheral T cell subsets including regulatory T cells in patients with acute herpes zoster (AHZ) and investigate its relationship to the development of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). T lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood from 76 patients with AHZ and 38 normal controls were analyzed using flow cytometry. According to the visual analogue scales in the acuter phase and followed up by PHN for 3 months, patients with herpes zoster (HZ) were divided into different patient groups. ⋯ Furthermore, FoxP3 expression was significantly increased by CD4+CD25(high) T cells in the severe group as compared with mild group, moderate group and normal controls. These results indicated that T cellular immunity in AHZ patients was impaired and suggested increased activation of Treg cells may suppress anti-viral CD4+ T cells immune responses, especially in the severe HZ patients. Treg cells may play an important role in the pathogenesis of AHZ and progression toward PHN.

Effects of a sunscreen formulation on albino hairless mice: a morphological approach.
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of a sunscreen formulation on the skin of albino hairless mice subjected to simulated solar light (SSL) in terms of morphological changes. Young adult albino hairless mice HRS/J (n = 36) were used as an experimental model for determining skin photoaging changes. Mice were irradiated with SSL, and the sunscreen (estimated SPF 30, PF-UVA) was obtained from the Pharmacy College/UFRJ, Brazil. ⋯ Animals from groups G3 and G1 displayed similar morphological profiles, without these changes. Animals from group G4 showed more morphological changes than group G2, emphasizing the relative importance of the putative photosensitizing components present in the vehicle formulation. The extent of the morphological skin changes suggested that the sunscreen formulation was effective against SSL, and showed the importance of assessing the phototoxicity of vehicle formulations.

Decreased blood levels of B lymphocytes and NK cells in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) infected with papillomavirus (HPV).
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) show an enhanced risk to develop human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and aggressive forms of this condition are seen in these patients. The aim of this study was to assess the possible relationship among HPV infection, immunosuppressive therapy and levels of leukocyte subsets in patients with SLE. The following individuals were included in the study: (1) SLE patients under immunosuppressive therapy and with lesions caused by HPV (n = 16); (2) SLE patients under immunosuppressive therapy and no evidence of HPV infection (n = 20); (3) untreated SLE patients with no evidence of HPV infection (n = 7), and; (4) healthy female subjects without evidence of HPV infection (n = 10). ⋯ In contrast, SLE patients receiving immunosuppressive drugs and with no evidence of HPV infection showed similar levels of B and NK cells than healthy controls. Those patients receiving mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) had a diminished number of B cells, and a positive correlation was detected between the dose of MMF and the number of HPV skin lesions. Our data suggest that therapy of SLE patients with MMF is associated with diminished levels of B and NK cells and an enhanced risk for HPV infection.

Association of TGFβ1 and clinical factors with scar outcome following melanoma excision.
All patients with primary cutaneous malignant melanoma undergo surgical excision to remove the tumour, resulting in scar formation. There is marked variation in the aesthetic appearance of scars following surgery but limited knowledge about the genetic factors affecting non-keloid, surgical scar outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the role of known clinical factors and genetic polymorphisms in pigmentation and wound repair genes in non-keloid scar outcome, following melanoma excision. ⋯ Results from this study suggest that genes involved in wound healing may play a role in determining scar outcome. Associations observed between scar outcome and clinical factors reinforce current clinical knowledge regarding factors affecting scarring. Replication studies in larger samples are warranted and will improve our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of scarring, potentially help to identify patients at risk of poor scar outcomes.
