High expression of MHC antigens and adhesion/costimulation molecules is considered as one of the major characteristics qualifying macrophages (M) and dendritic cells (DC) as professional antigen presenting cells. Since accessory activity of M is known to be weaker than that of DC but both M or DC can differentiate from blood monocytes (MO) depending on culture conditions (i.e. GM-CSF vs GM-CSF/IL-4), we investigated the kinetics of expression of MHC antigens and several adhesion/costimulation molecules during the differentiation of DC or M from blood MO. ⋯ Significant differences in surface antigen expression DC vs M were recognizable for MHC class II, CD86, CD80, CD1a, CD40 and ICAM-1. Specifically, major differences occurred for MHC class II, CD86, CD40 and ICAM-1. Therefore, the higher accessory ability of DC compared to M in naive T cell priming may be related to qualitative and quantitative differences in expression of these immunologically important surface molecules.

About a century after Koch's discovery of the TB bacilli the tuberculosis epidemic which had appeared to be under control was again recognized as a major global health threat. The decline in the epidemic in this century had been largely through the improved living standards and, eventually, the availability and use of effective antibiotics. While tuberculosis gradually disappeared from the health agenda in the western world it remained a big killer throughout the century and in 1992 an estimated 2.7 million TB deaths occurred; 30 million will die from TB during the 1990s if current trends are not reversed. ⋯ The control of the epidemic can only be through a concerted action to reinstate TB as priority among health concerns, reflected in national and international resources. A coalition of public and private supporters must be mobilized to support the effort to fight the disease. Governments, non-governmental organizations, the business community, refugee organizations, medical institutions, and other UN agencies are invited to join with WHO in this effort.

Several viruses may cause more or less severe acute respiratory infections in man, some of which are followed by systemic infection. Only for influenza and measles are licensed vaccines available at present. The protection induced by influenza vaccines, which are based on inactivated whole virus or viral subunits, depends largely on the matching of vaccine strain and circulating virus. ⋯ Live vaccines based on adenovirus types 4 and 7 in oral enteric-coated vaccines, which lead to virus replication in the intestines but not in the respiratory tract have been included in military vaccination programs. The possibility to replace e.g. the E3 region with foreign DNA makes adenoviruses also suitable as cloning vectors for proteins of other respiratory viruses. Although live attenuated vaccines against some of the serotypes of rhinoviruses have shown promising results, the generation of a multivalent vaccine against this epidemiologically most significant cause of acute respiratory infections will be almost impossible, due to the multiplicity of serotypes involved.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
