The pediatric sedation unit: a prospective analysis of parental satisfaction.
As financial pressures drive health care to be more cost-effective and efficient, performing procedures outside the main operating room (MOR) is becoming more common. Pediatric sedation units (PSU) have proven both effective and safe at providing anesthesia for children. However, there is limited data available regarding the PSU and its potential application in pediatric otolaryngology. ⋯ The PSU is a satisfactory patient experience for outpatient procedures in pediatric otolaryngology at our institution. However, this parent survey has identified education prior to surgery and timeliness of surgery as two areas to improve to meet the satisfaction standard provided by the OR.

Care of pediatric tracheostomy in the immediate postoperative period and timing of first tube change.
To analyze the safety of a standardized pediatric tracheostomy care protocol in the immediate postoperative period and its impact on tracheostomy related complications. ⋯ A standardized postoperative pediatric tracheostomy care protocol resulted in decreased rates of skin breakdown and demonstrated that pediatric tracheostomy tubes can be safely changed as early as 3 days postoperatively.

Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Greek OSA-18 questionnaire in children undergoing polysomnography.
Translations of validated questionnaires help to compare different countries/cultures populations and establish protocols for global health. OSA-18 is a validated disease-specific questionnaire for pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Our aim was to validate OSA-18 in Greek and correlate it with polysomnography results and OSA severity. ⋯ Greek OSA-18 is an instrument with satisfactory internal consistency, reliability, and responsiveness, but it is a poor predictor of OSA severity.

Bacteriology in relation to clinical findings and treatment of acute mastoiditis in children.
We assessed clinical, radiological, laboratory and microbiological findings in children with acute mastoiditis in order to improve the diagnostics and treatment of these patients. We also investigated whether different pathogens cause different clinical findings of mastoiditis. ⋯ The clinical findings of acute mastoiditis differ according to the causative pathogen. S. pneumoniae, especially strains with reduced susceptibility, causes severe symptoms and leads to mastoidectomy more often than the other pathogens. S. pyogenes causes less otalgia than the other pathogens. P. aeruginosa particularly affects children with tympanostomy tubes and causes a less aggressive form of disease.

I'M SLEEPY: a short pediatric sleep apnea questionnaire.
Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent but under-diagnosed disease. The importance of screening for OSA has been emphasized in the recently published guidelines for the diagnosis and management of childhood OSA. Several pediatric OSA questionnaires are available, but are complicated to use or not sensitive enough for screening. ⋯ I'M SLEEPY is a sensitive and easy-to-use screening tool for pediatric OSA. It is intended to be used by the primary physician in every suspected case of OSA. Larger studies are needed in the primary care setting for the validation of this tool.
