Diffusion tensor imaging in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: volumetric analysis of the corticospinal tract.
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) allows direct visualization and volumetric analysis of the corticospinal tract (CST). The purpose of this study was to determine whether color maps and fiber tracking derived from DTI data are valuable in detecting and quantifying CST degeneration in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ⋯ This study shows that volumetric analysis by using DTI-based color maps is valuable in detecting and monitoring structural degeneration of the CST. This will lead to objective and quantitative assessment of axonal degeneration in ALS.

Gadolinium use in spine procedures for patients with allergy to iodinated contrast--experience of 127 procedures.
To review the safety and efficacy of gadolinium as a contrast agent in spine pain management procedures in patients who are at high risk for a contrast reaction and are therefore unacceptable candidates for the use of standard nonionic contrast. ⋯ Gadolinium seems to be a safe alternative to standard nonionic contrast in spine pain management procedures in those patients considered to be at high risk for a contrast reaction.

A lingual abscess is difficult to diagnose in the absence of physical signs. MR imaging may provide an excellent and invaluable adjunct to clinical examination, but the literature is incomplete in defining the various MR imaging findings of abscess. The objective of this study was to determine the MR imaging features of tongue abscesses. ⋯ An abscess typically presents as a cystic lesion surrounded by an enhancing capsule formation, but lesions may also present as solid masses that enhance diffusely or peripherally.

A dedicated animal model for mechanical thrombectomy in acute stroke.
Recent studies have focused on mechanical thrombectomy as a means to reduce the time required for revascularization and increase the revascularization rate in acute stroke. To date no systematic evaluation has been made of the different mechanical devices in this novel and fast-developing field of endovascular interventions. To facilitate such evaluations, we developed a specific in vivo model for mechanical thrombectomy that allows visualization of dislocation or fragmentation of the thrombus during angiographic manipulation. ⋯ The model presented here allows selective and reliable thromboembolization of vessels that reproduce the anatomic and hemodynamic situation in acute cerebrovascular stroke. It permits visualization of the thrombus during angiography and intervention, providing unique insight into the behavior of both thrombus and device, which is potentially useful in the development and evaluation of mechanical clot retrieval in acute cerebrovascular stroke.

Iron particle-enhanced visualization of inflammatory central nervous system lesions by high resolution: preliminary data in an animal model.
The detection of cell infiltration is critical for the diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory disorders, especially in the central nervous system (CNS). Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) particles have recently been introduced as a contrast agent to detect macrophage migration in vivo by MR imaging. We tested the hypothesis that focal hyperechogenicity due to SPIO-laden macrophages can also be visualized on high-resolution sonography. ⋯ SPIO particles allow the detection and demarcation of inflammatory CNS lesions on sonograms by specific macrophage imaging.
