ReviewInherited cerebellar ataxia in childhood: a pattern-recognition approach using brain MRI.
Ataxia is the principal symptom of many common neurologic diseases in childhood. Ataxias caused by dysfunction of the cerebellum occur in acute, intermittent, and progressive disorders. Most of the chronic progressive processes are secondary to degenerative and metabolic diseases. ⋯ Supratentorial and cord lesions are also common. This review will discuss a pattern-recognition approach to inherited cerebellar ataxia in childhood. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive discussion that ultimately could help neuroradiologists better manage this important topic in pediatric neurology.

Cognitive impairment in mild traumatic brain injury: a longitudinal diffusional kurtosis and perfusion imaging study.
Cognitive impairment is frequent among patients with mild traumatic brain injury despite the absence of detectable damage on conventional MR imaging. In this study, the quantitative MR imaging techniques DTI, DKI, and ASL were used to measure changes in the structure and function in the thalamus and WM of patients with MTBI during a short follow-up period, to determine whether these techniques can be used to investigate relationships with cognitive performance and to predict outcome. ⋯ Combined application of DTI, DKI, and ASL to study MTBI might be useful for investigating dynamic changes in the thalamus and WM as well as cognitive impairment during a short follow-up period, though the small number of patients examined did not predict outcome.

Clinical TrialTreatment of acute vertebrobasilar occlusion using thrombectomy with stent retrievers: initial experience with 18 patients.
Acute vertebrobasilar occlusion is an ominous disease with few proved effective treatments. Experience with stent retrievers is scarce and limited to combined therapies (stent retrievers associated with previous intravenous fibrinolysis, intra-arterial thrombolysis, or other mechanical devices). We present our experience with 18 patients treated with direct thrombectomy by using stent retrievers. ⋯ Thrombectomy with stent retrievers is feasible in the treatment of vertebrobasilar occlusion. These initial results must be confirmed by further prospective studies with a larger number of cases.

Age-related trends in the treatment and outcomes of ruptured cerebral aneurysms: a study of the nationwide inpatient sample 2001-2009.
Patient age substantially influences treatment decisions for ruptured cerebral aneurysms. It would be useful to understand national age-related trends of treatment techniques and outcomes in patients treated for ruptured cerebral aneurysm in the United States. ⋯ Between 2001 and 2009, there has been a significant increase in the proportion of patients with ruptured aneurysms undergoing endovascular coiling rather than aneurysm clipping. This increase was more pronounced in older patients. Mortality from aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage decreased during the past decade, regardless of aneurysm treatment technique.
